Australia: Man admits plot to bomb Israel embassy

Australia's first trial in the war on terror ended abruptly Friday when British-born Jack Roche changed his plea, from innocent to guilty, admitting his role in an al-Qaida plot to blow up the Israeli Embassy in Canberra.

The trial of the Muslim convert, who first came in contact with Islamic militants in Australia and who later lunched with Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan, threw new light on how terrorist cells are operating in Asian region.

After making contact with the Southeast Asian terror group Jemaah Islamiyah in the western Australian city of Perth, Roche met with the group's senior operatives before traveling to Pakistan and eventually to an al-Qaida training camp in Afghanistan where he met bin Laden.

At his trial this week, Roche told Perth District Court that when al-Qaida terrorists in Afghanistan told him to investigate the possibilities of bombing Israeli targets in Australia back in April 2000, he went along with the plan, partly because he feared they would kill him otherwise.

it should be easy to provide some proof in the widely excepted form of a link of a DUer stating, "...all attacks against Jews are actually perpetrated by Jews." or something to that effect. Remember the key words in your accusation are "all attacks".

That anyone plotting or attempting to bomb an embassy should have the book thrown at them. Some of the claims made by Roche strike me as being on the same bizarre level as some of the Falconio case, and I'm not buying the al-Qaida masterminding what he did slant to the story. The whole thing with taking a taxi ride through Yarralumla with his son in tow and trying to be sneaky when he videoed the Israeli embassy, and then saying the corner of the very quiet street a bunch of embassys are on would be a good place to put a truck comes across as a bit amateurish, that's all. Even back in 2000 or whenever it was, security for embassys was already tight and while a busload of Japanense tourists taking snapshots of embassys is pretty normal, some guy with a really ugly beard and a video camera in a taxi would of course draw attention, which he did....

Given that a friend of mine's husband works there - along with many other innocent people, I'm appalled if someone was planning an attack there (or anywhere else in the world)

I have my suspiscions about this case but I don't for a minute think that Australia is immune from fundy nutbags of varying stripes - we've got nice weather but it aint a utopia yet
