`Do not have children if they won't be healthy!'
http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/437879.html

A shocking new study reveals how key figures in the pre-state Zionist establishment proposed castrating the mentally ill, sterilizing the poor and doing everything possible to ensure reproduction only among the `best of people.'

Castrating the mentally ill, encouraging reproduction among families "numbered among the intelligentsia" and limiting the size of "families of Eastern origin" and "preventing ... lives that are lacking in purpose" - these proposals are not from some program of the Third Reich but rather were brought up by key figures in the Zionist establishment of the Land of Israel during the period of the British Mandate. It turns out there was a great deal of enthusiasm here for the improvement of the hereditary characteristics of a particular race (eugenics). This support, which has been kept under wraps for many years, is revealed in a study that examines the ideological and intellectual roots at the basis of the establishment of the health system in Israel.

Wow, how "progressive"... :eyes: I guess they too have to maintain
the "purity" of their race as well. Interesting...

3. And you may have missed the point of posting this article.

Bringing up this well written intelligent, historic article about
*PROPOSED* eugenics in a 1930's PRE-STATE ISRAEL from a democratic country with a free press that allows for self-introspection is clearly supposed to show what the poster stated:

"I guess they too have to maintain the "purity" of their race as well."

The implication of the above statement is quite clear....and imho, repulsive.

5. Hmmm
Yes, muck raking. No suggestion was ever made way back then of forced sterilization. It was supposed to be voluntary. Today such thoughts and ideas have been dumped.

unfortunately is still very popular

Apparently you missed that fact in the article.

7. Though It Is Not Always Appreciated, Ma'am
This was the ordinary state of popular science in the early decades of the last century, part of the normal mental furniture of most educated people in the West. It is easy to look back and laugh at the deluded belief of our ancestors that they were in possession of the final state of knowledge in all questions; doubtless we today will provide similar amusement to our distant descendants....

9. Eugenics was considered a social good
At one time.

Thankfully that is in the past.

10. Oh yes, Lithos.....
thankfully someone brought up a *PROPSED* eugenics article
from the 1930's PRE-STATE ISRAEL....and then was kind enough
to add the line:

"I guess they too have to maintain the "purity" of their
race as well".

And I too am glad its in the past...WHERE IT BELONGS.

12. Absolutely
As an aside, for some reason there has been a resurgance in old style Social Darwinism here in the US starting with the rise of Reaganomics and continuing on with Bush's policies, the basis of both theories essentially claim those that are rich deserve their wealth because they are somehow better.

18. Social darwinism crops up whenever you have a class system in effect.
It is diagnostic.

The upper classes, however that may be defined, NEVER think that
it was mere luck or transitory advantage that gave them the upper
hand. History, for the most part, shows that this sort of thinking
is fatuous. One does see able members of the anointed classes, but
it is clearly an attribute of individuals, not the class as a whole.
Social darwinian type theories started cropping up to serve this
purpose around the time that the Divine Right of Kings and the Great
Chain of Being and similar rationalizations which were developed in
the Medieval period lost their punch due to the rise of reason rather
than revelation as a source of truth.

20. So was the Kristallnacht.
So you are saying anything that happened back then is irrelevant? Oh, history, that's all in the past! Offers no insights into the racists of today? Should be forgotten? :puke:

The Holocaust ended almost sixty years ago, but my family has not forgotten. For us, "Never Again" is something more than an excuse to kill Palestinians.

I am not amused to see historical revisionism is not limited to anti-semites.

I'm saying that people shouldn't make stupid comments like:
"I guess they too have to maintain the 'purity' of their race."

This comment has nothing to do with the article. I think the original poster didn't bother to read the story -- and see how it was a PREPOSAL that took place SEVENTY-FIVE years ago, and how everybody knows this is WPONG now -- which is why the newspaper described it as "shocking." It seems to me, frankly, that the original poster, by using "they" (to described all Zionist Israelis, and perhaps all Jews) demonstrated his anti-Semitism.

19. Family planning
Here the stations were aimed at "giving advice on matters of sex and marriage, especially in the matter of preventing pregnancy in certain cases." They distributed birth-control devices for free to the penniless and at reduced prices to those of limited means. In Tel Aviv the advice stations were opened in centers of immigrant populations: Ajami in Jaffa, the Hatikvah Quarter and Neveh Sha'anan.

Without the leadup, I'd think this was Planned Parenthood. What was the inception of that organization? Was it to improve society also?

22. Margaret Sanger...
The founder of PP, and according to anti-choicers I've encountered, a Satan Worshipper and Adultress Who Is Burning In Hell As We Speak, dabbled in eugenics, as did most people of her era. Back then, people believed that being 'fit' or 'unfit' was a hereditary thing, which explains some of the more out there things I read in her books...

btw, all you Americans should donate to PP. They're a great organisation under threat from right-wing extremists...
