Syrian police are exploring the possibility that a Palestinian activist with ties to Ahmed Jibril's organization had a hand in the assassination of Hamas official Iz a Din al-Sheikh Khalil, the London-based Al-Hayat newspaper reported on Wednesday.
Syria and Hamas accused Israel of the killing which took place in Damascus on September 26. Israeli officials refused to comment on the charges yet made no efforts to deny its involvement in the operation.
According to Al-Hayat, police suspect that a good friend of Khalil's, a man identified as "Abu Amin," made the telephone call which ignited the explosive charge attached to his car at around 11 A.M.
Sources close to Abu Amin, who apparently quit Ahmed Jibril's Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command two years ago, denied that Amin was involved in the assassination.
