With Monday's pre-dawn phone call to al-Jazeera, Suha Arafat graduated from being the Yoko Ono of Palestinian politics to Ramallah's Lady Macbeth. The rapier-sharp character assassination of her husband's heirs-in-waiting must have left Ahmed Qurei and Mahmoud Abbas wondering which of them was doomed to play King Duncan in this Shakespearean production.
The vast majority of Palestinians never related to Suha as the first lady of Palestine. Most of Arafat's associates have despised her from the first moment she arrived to work as his "economic advisor" in Tunis. Among the top brass of the Palestinian leadership, she is ridiculed as "Madame Susu" and "first lady of Paris."
In 2001 Arafat's cronies finally managed to drive her away to a lavish lifestyle in France. In revenge, the Sorbonne-educated Suha, in a series of interviews in the Arab press, lashed out at corrupt officials in her husband's entourage, accusing them of giving him bad advice and stealing the money of the Palestinians.
Arafat aides retaliated by revealing that Suha, 41, was receiving about $100,000 a month from the Palestinian budget to cover her shopping sprees in Paris.
