To achieve peace, all-out war on terrorism is only path in Middle East
http://www.detnews.com/2003/editorial/0308/24/a11-252023.htm

"With the blood of its children running through the streets of Jerusalem, Israel has no choice but to crumple the road map to peace and instead draft a battle plan for combatting terrorism.

skip

But the peace process has failed again, for the same reason it always fails. The Palestinians are wed to terrorism, and real peace can not be bargained with a terrorist state.

So Israel has no choice but to seek a military solution, to roll its tanks again across the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Palestinians blame their violence on Israel's oppression and brutality. But the truth is that Israel has not been brutal enough in the face of terror. Its answer is surgical strikes, targeted assassinations and a catch-and-release prisoner policy.

skip

But to end the violence, Israel must strike with terrible force. To be blunt, the Palestinians must be brought to their knees, made to feel the pain of allowing terrorists to act in their name.

The path taken in President George W. Bush's road map to peace did just the opposite. It started the Palestinians toward statehood without forcing them to unstrap their bombs.

Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas, Arafat's puppet, says he risks civil war by disarming the terrorists. He must be warned that war is coming for certain if he doesn't."

Straight talk is good to hear.

2. TERRORISM IS A CODE WORD
Terrorism is not anyone who attacks white people. Palestinians have no army, no defense. They are fighting for their homeland anyway they can. I DO NOT AGREE with bombing buses full of children, but these are oppressed people, who have been displaced, killed, moved to ghettos and repeatedly lied to, humiliated and fucked over. If this happened in the US, where there was an occupying force that had taken up officing in the White House, Lincoln memorial and St. Patrick's, I think Americans might do what ever it took to get them out.

These are not sub human people. These are desparate, oppressed people trying to preserve their homeland at all costs, something Jews should very much understand.

Oppression of any people is WRONG!

Any Dem who supports the typical American position of Blind support for Israel is a fucking hypocrite.

11. where did "white people" come into
the discussion. Jews are not all white. The Palestinians have several options besides murder to achieve their reasonble goals. The goal of destroying Israel as a Jewish state is not reasonable. Notice, before I get flamed, I am not commenting on the rights and wrongs here, only on the fact that they do not have the power to do it, and the Israelis are not going to give up and go away. First they will destroy the Palestinians, at least the ones who keep fighting. Nobody is going to let someone else kill them if they can help it.

All the Arab armies, with Allah behind them, could not kick the Jews into the sea. Teen-age psychotics and terrible old men like Hit- I mean Arafat, will not either.

20. Thank you
and if terrorists were a finite group, then killing them all might accomplish peace. Unfortunately, this won't solve the problem in Irag or Israel. The PA needs to cut off the supply of weapons to the terrorist organizations and then explain reality to them. If that doesn't work, the the PA needs to do what Israel did early on to their own rogue killers; kill them themselves. Only when they see that kind of strength coming from their own, will they respect it.
As a woman, I find the prospect of men granting respect only to those who can kill them to be rather disgusting, but some men seem to prefer it that way.

I wonder what is in it for these war mongers. Arafat has gotten wealthy, where is the money coming from. Find the source and perhaps peace can come to Israel. In the mean time, only victory. No compromise, no 99th chance, just victory. Same as allies did in WWII

14. all out war
According to your philosophy then the allies should have killed every German, Japanese, or Italian. All out war means fight to win, no negotiated peace.

15. This is not correct.
All out war means all resources are used, the entire national
population is mobilized, and all enemy "resources" are targets.
No silly whining about killing "civilians".

"Unconditional surrender" means no negotiated peace.

19. A few additional comments.
Wars are sometimes fought with objectives other than to
crush the enemy, but sensible ones are always fought for
well defined political objectives, usually some form of
compelling obedience to ones' wishes, and in that sense of
course one always wants to "win".

Total war begins to appear with the French under Napoleon,
and develops from there to a culmination in WWII. Atomic weapons,
and to a lesser degree other WMD, made it an asinine idea unless
one desires obliteration.

It is notable, since you bring up the Germans in WWII, that they
went at in as ruthless and violent and total a way as one can
imagine, and they still got their ass pounded flat for their
trouble, as did the Japanese. People who think that you just have
to grit your teeth hard and be a real asshole to the enemy and
you are somehow guaranteed a win should consider that fact. They
should also consider the results of the recent conflicts in
VietNam and Afghanistan, to name two, before assuming mere technical
superiority is sufficient. The natives are adequately armed these
days and they know how to play the game.

10. Every thinking person knows
that a military solution will NOT bring peace to Israel. Btw, how many Palestinians do you think should be killed? A few thousand only? How about all of them? What about their fellow Muslims in the surrounding countries? What about the moderate Muslims in other countries?

I bet the people who suggest this or agree with this live far away from the conflict and don't have to do any of the killing.

12. What has restraint
accomplished? The blood of Israeli children running in the steets. No, you are right, I don't live in Israel, but I do live in a country that has been grieviously attacked without warning or provocation. The following words apply to us as well.

The words of Nolan Finley of the Detroit News:

"There's only one way to deal with those who find glory in slaughtering children: Kill them. The bomber's wife said her husband died fulfilling his dream of martyrdom. The man had two kids of his own, and yet his life's dream was to die killing other people's children.

You can't negotiate with that level of ignorance, hatred and religious insanity"

and cool heads, because the alternative is worse! How many people, in your opinion, need to be killed to bring peace to Israel? Would it bring peace to Israel? I don't believe the majority of Israelis could live with deliberately killing a lot of people. If they could then they're no different from the extremist Palestinians.

I've just read in another post that Arafat is being invited to the US for peace talks. Even Washington sees the need for restraint and negotiations. That is the only way.

17. You quoted a Nolan Finlay of the Detroit News
The bomber's wife said her husband died fulfilling his dream of martyrdom. Martyrdom was what he wanted. She didn't say his dream was to die killing other people's children. I sure wish media people would be more careful in their writings.
Think of the innocent children who become victims of war in so many places, not only in Israel and the occupied territories but also in Iraq, the Congo, Liberia, etc. How can grownups be so cruel, and encourage more slaughtering. The mind boggles.

25. All-out war is the road to peace?
Uh, okay...

Will they ever learn their lesson? All-out war didn't help the Americans in Vietnam. All-out war didn't help the Russians in Afghanistan. All-out war won't help the Americans in Iraq, or the Russians in Chechnya. All-out war didn't help Sharon remove the terrorists before, so why should it now? End the occupation, and any empathy the Palestinian people have with the terrorists will disintegrate. If they continue attacks, they will be completely destroyed.

"End the occupation, and any empathy the Palestinian people have with the terrorists will disintegrate. If they continue attacks, they will be completely destroyed."

Who is "they" as mentioned above.

And after you answer that one, who do you suggest should be the destroyers?

27. Hamas, Islamic Jihad...
Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigade, and so on are the "they."

The Palestinian government should be the destroyers, once they have the infrastructure to do that.
