Teaching Hatred of Israel and Jews in the New Palestinian Authority School
The first truth about the PA schoolbooks is that both new and old include anti-Semitic messages, de-legitimize Israel's existence and incite to hatred and violence. Anti Semitism, for example, is found openly in the new 6th grade book "Reading the Koran", as children read about Allah's warning to the Jews that because of their evil Allah will kill them:

"...Oh you who are Jews... long for death if you are truthful... for the death from which you flee, that will surely overtake you... "

snip

All the above messages are found in new schoolbooks written and published by the PA since 2000. The first claim, that new PA books have fixed the problems, is thus flagrantly untrue.

However, half of the books still in use by the PA schools are books they republish under the symbol of their own Ministry of Education, that were written by Jordan. These books include the following hate promotion:

"One must beware of the Jews, for they are treacherous and disloyal."

"I learn from this lesson: I believe that the Jews are the enemies of the Prophets and the believers."

"Remember: The final and inevitable result will be the victory of the Muslims over the Jews."

"The clearest examples of racist belief and racial discrimination in the world are Nazism and Zionism. "

The PA is planting the seeds of the next war in their youth, and it is incumbent upon those European governments who give political and financial support to the PA, to demand the immediate expunging of all hate material from PA schoolbooks. Indeed, the simple step of conditioning all aid to the Palestinians on the elimination of hatred from their schoolbooks would be one of the most important steps that could be taken to promote peace in the Middle East today.

1. New Palestinian Schoolbooks
Altarbiya Alislamiya (Grade 6)
Islamic Education Part

Page 67: "Palestine Has become part of the Islamic world….Islam does not deny that it is a Muslim's duty to honour his country…..The defense of the homeland is an obligation upon every Muslim, however minimal his connection to his country."

Page 68: "Whoever dies in defense of his country is considered a shahid, who will attain the highest spiritual levels possible." (This means that by dying for your country, you will attain all the rewards in heaven - a very emotive statement, especially in such a religious region.)

Page 69: "Palestinians expect that every Palestinian will return to each city or village from where he was expelled." (This comment ignores the fact that many Palestinians became refugees, because they were encouraged to leave by the military leaders. Further, the hidden message implies that eventually Israel will be wiped off the map).

Page 83: "Jews never ceased to threaten them with death, even when the Prophet (Mohammed) appeared". (This refers to a particular tribe in the early days of Islam). "The students asks: Why did the Jews not believe in the High Prophet...?"

5. So?
Yes, Israelis say the same thing. What's the problem? One may find that the more religions that the school becomes, the more nationalistic the text books become. Palestinians, just like Israelis have every right to be nationalistic and talk about how important their homeland is to them.

Here are a few important ideas that one should consider when discussing this topic:

- From 1967-1994, there was no custom-made Palestinian education curriculum. Israeli authorities used censored versions of Jordanian and Egyptian textbooks

- The EC Heads of Mission report found that allegations against the new PA textbooks were largely unfounded.

If you live there, get off their land.

They lived there before, and they will live there after.

What is in dispute?

2. That's terrible
Of course, Israeli textbooks do similar things, though with more subtlety:

http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/511984.html

We can always hope Sharon's crazy peace plan works and gives the Palestinians statehood. After that, there's at least a chance of both peoples developing greater mutual respect and beginning the process of forgiving the other.

6. Excellent
The difference , of course, is in a democratic society holding a mirror to yourself is an important part of society. Sadly when a society perpetuates myths and refuses to acknowledge their existence {or worse ....exacerbates their existence) it is hard to see how they can correct them.

Podeh says that if the Palestinian textbooks were compelled to go through the lengthy and exhaustive process of demythologization that Israeli textbooks went through, "then the road to mutual reconciliation is, I regret to say, liable to be a long one."

8. Problematic text books
Yes, holding up a mirror can bring about questions regarding the meaning of democracy.

The Proclamation of Independence contains a key sentence regarding the Arabs in Israel: “We appeal to the Arab inhabitants of the State of Israel”. Here the Arab people are not called “Palestinians”, nor are they spoken of as citizens of the country but only as inhabitants.

7. Israeli school books
By the way, what do Israeli school books say about Irgun "terror"? Some Israelis seem to believe that Manechem Begin was not a "terrorist" and that the Irgun performed non-"terrorist" defensive activites activities like warning civilians before killing them or blowing up British embassies in places like Rome.

It would be also interesting to read in Isreali text books about the historical sexual patterns of Palestinians demonstrating why some kin of the Canaans don't consider themselves to be Jews or why Israel practiced racial cleansing by not allowing those who fled war to return home.

Do Isreali text books even recognize Palestinians or do they still claim that they are something like Algerian Arabs?

I'm sure that the accusations could go back and forth endlessly with both sides pulling out the hair of the other.

reasons to love them.

if only those silly arabs would bow down and agree to be uncomplaining slaves of god's chosen people, then everything will be ok.

yes i know the palestinians are a complete mess, but after 36 years of occupation, perhaps the occupiers must shoulder some of the blame eh?

Who is to shoulder the blame for the mess extant before the lands were over-run in '67?

What do you feel the political leadership and people of Arab Palestine could do themselves to improve the mess they are in?

18. Palestinian leaders
Edited on Sun Dec-26-04 11:29 AM by King Mongo
To improve the mess, Palestinian leaders could do the following:

1) Apply for US citizenship
2) Apply for EU citizenship
3) Learn how to swim accross the dead sea
4) Dig their own graves
5) Hide until the Shinui party becomes the political majority and declares citizenship and equality for everyone regardless of race, culture or religion.

They could .....

1. PUBLICLY accept israels right to exist...and mean it.
2. Accept their is no right of return
3. Condemn and outlaw terrorism and dismantle hamas et al.
4. Stop the mindless incitement to genocide in media
5. Sit down and negotiate

For your own safety, do not hold your breath.

Palestinian leaders could.....

6) Vote Sharon out of office so that negotiations will continue
7) Recognize a one-state solution with equality and citizenship for everyone
8) Condemn Jewish terrorism and dismantle the IDF et al.
9) Rewrite Israeli textbooks so that students stop spitting on people

Spitting on God's Image
http://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2004/012/2.17.html

10) Recognize the Palestinian identity and use such in Israeli text books
11) Recognize the right of people to live in Israel, including the refugees
12) Denounce the practice of racial cleansing, such as the cause of the refugee problem and the removal of the illegal settlers

etc. etc. etc. Palestinian leaders can do many things.

23. The best thing that Palestinian leaders could do....
My favorite thing that Palestinians leaders should do is:

13) Discourage the practice of religion so that everyone can share the little piece of land together under conditions of complete equality and true democracy.

24. So they must...
`Recognize the right of people to live in Israel, including the refugees``

AND..``and the removal of the illegal settlers``

Both?

The settlers (jews)according to this logic must not be allowed to stay but the refugees must be allowed to return...

even though you say ..``Recognize a one-state solution with equality and citizenship for everyone``

Everyone except for Jews??

Thats one of many reasons why it would never happen....thy may just use your logic....

26. Sorry for the confusion
Sorry, I'll rewrite the line so that it is more readable:

Uncomprehensive text:
12) Denounce the practice of racial cleansing, such as the cause of the refugee problem and the removal of the illegal settlers

Comprehensive text:
12) (DENOUNCE the practice of racial cleansing, (such as (the cause of the refugee problem) AND (the removal of the illegal settlers)))

Furthermore, everyone can be broken into two parts: every and one. Every means kind of like many and one means something like individual. In otherwords, it's kind of like saying any individual regardless of race, culture or religion (three words that I match together quite often).

I hope that this clears up any misunderstandings. If there are any other confusions, please don't hesitate to ask. I am here at your service. :)

Winning means democracy and equality for everyone.

Losing means segregation or separation unless separation includes fair compensations, democracy, integration and equality combined with independence, and sustainability.
