Bystander killed in failed IAF assassination attempt in Gaza
Israel Air Force helicopters fired three missiles
at a target north of Gaza City on Tuesday evening,
killing at least one person and wounding around 26
others, according to hospital officials in the
Gaza Strip.

*****

Resident Shadi Tayan, who owns a
bookstore in the area, said
"the people in the car jumped
out and ran in two different
directions" after one rocket
landed near the front of the
car. After the men fled, two
more missiles hit.

*****

The attack killed bystander Hassan Hamlawi, 65,
who was sitting on the sidewalk outside his
water pipe shop when the missiles hit nearby.
Among those wounded were four children,
including an 8-year-old boy in critical
condition, doctors said.

Divest and disengage. The only moral option left.

And Faux News will have hostile and one-sided questions for the Israeli spokesperson.

(More sarcasm).

6. There is no difference.
Face up to it. They knew perfectly well what they were
shooting at, and what the effect would be. Worse yet, they
botched it.

First you say they knew what the effect would be. Then you say they botched it. Choose one.

9. no need to choose...
The IAF knew innocent civilians would get killed, but they went ahead without any regard for human life *and* then the IAF botched it by missing the intended target.

They sure did get that old man and his donkey though.

10. Indeed.
Firing three missiles into a traffic jam,
there was no question that some random bystanders,
or bysitters as the case may be,
would get splattered about,
but even with this big of a hammer,
they failed to "service the target".

Edited on Tue Aug-26-03 07:46 PM by Darranar
I think you mean that they knew that if they fired on the militant, innocent bystanders would be hurt and likely killed. Not only did they know that as they fired on the militant, but they missed the militant.

25. Intent is irrelevant.
Who was targeted is completely meaningless. Only the result matters. They fired missles into a crowded street with complete disregard for the lives of innocent bystanders. In the US this is a felony called criminally negligent homicide as defined:

(a) A person commits the crime of criminally negligent homicide if, with criminal negligence, the person causes the death of another person.

You can't kill and cripple 27 bystanders and absolve yourself by saying that you were aiming at someone else.
And how is firing missles from a helicopter an act of bravery? Bravery implies a willingness to meet danger, to show courage under life-threatening conditions. If the pilots were not facing a direct threat, the word brave does not apply.

And yes, those who sponsor suicide attacks against Israelis should be arrested and charged with murder in the first degree.

an innocent civilian. That was dfong's point.

I personally don't think he was targeted. I think that those who fired didn't care much about civilian casualties, but he wasn't targeted deliberately.

Of course, a chicken strangled is different from a chicken with its head cut off, but does it matter to the chicken?

26. Everybody in the field of fire
that didn't belong to Hamas. The pilot didn't fire wildly, I hope. The poor old guy and his donkey were in the crosshairs when the pilot(s) pulled the trigger.

Maybe you have a different definition of "targeted". You probably do.

the missle hit him...duh

On Edit: If he was *not* deliberately in the crosshairs when the pilot fired, then the pilot was firing indiscriminately.

Was it a direct hit on The poor old guy and his donkey or were they
victims of the local blast? Again, do you have proof that The poor old guy and his donkey were hit directly and The poor old guy and his donkey were in the crosshairs?

since I placed "On Edit:" in the post. Your skills of observation must be legend.

Your skills of debate, however, leave much to be desired:

I was joking about the "malfunction" drool, I thought you were also. I now see I have severely over-estimated your cognitive abilities. My bad.

BTW, Welcome to DU.
