Giuliana Sgrena and Rachel Corrie
Did the Giuliana Sgrena story cause anyone to think of the Rachel Corrie one, as it did me?

When I hear about the Italian public's outraged reaction to the incident, I wonder why there was not a similar reaction here in the U.S. to the Rachel Corrie incident?

I was talking with three coworkers yesterday about the Sgrena story, and asked them about Corrie, and none of them recognized the name. Even after I reminded them what the story was about, they didn't remember it. They were all very interested and said they would google the name when they got a chance.

I'm not blaming them for not knowing about it. The only reason I know about it is because I get my news from the Internet. I've never once seen Corrie mentioned on TV, and I've never seen a story about her in the papers. Not when it happened, not through all the political and legal developments, never.

That's screwed up, imo. The Corrie story should be a huge one.

And it's not about Corrie's politics. Giuliana Sgrena writes for a Communist paper. I'm sure most of the Italians that are outraged about her death aren't Communists.

1. NV Congressman Gibbons and that Alabama politician thought
using people like Rachel as human shields in Iraq was ok. We have some sick jerks running this country and some people put them there.

2. All I can think of are cynical answers, media and "war"
USAnian media sucks, is so full of propaganda to keep the masses placated and obsessing over things that don't matter (sex, cars, etc) rather than real news. There is no "war" in Israel, according to the USAnians. The rest of the world sees what is happening in the Iraq invasion by the USA. People have heard about Corrie but don't care because "she asked for it" by being a human shield. People in Italy and the rest of the "civilized" world believe in a free press. While I can logically state this, I really don't understand HOW usanians can be this way either and I hope to hell that this continues to get media coverage.

Sorry for all the ""s, but I wanted to make sure you know my words are cynical and not get into a flame war, accusing me of believing what I write in quotes.

3. I think the problem is our media blacked out the coverage of Rachel Corrie
How many people do you know even know about her?

Unfortunately that was just another truth silenced by those who own the media outlets.

No ideological agenda? Riiiight.

7. It's clear from another thread
Giuliana Sgrena blew the whistle on the US use of napalm. She broke Rummies' unwritten rules of "embedded reporters" -- and like Richard Clarke, and Valerie Flame, and Paul O'Neill -- she had to be "terminated with extreme prejudice."

That's how Bush, and Cheney, and Rove, and Rummie, and Combone, and Wolfie, and Feith and Perle play the game.

Ever wonder why Judith Miller will do jail time -- while Bob Novak smirks on CNN a free man.

And then there's Jim Gannon/Guckert.

Giuliana Sgrena broke Rummie's rules. And the Military Intelligence Hit Squad "missed."
