Settlers verbally attacked Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz during his visit Tuesday to Gush Katif, which is slated for evacuation under the disengagement plan. The crowd was so vehement that Mofaz's bodyguards hustled him from the scene when it became apparent that some of the protesters wanted, in fact, to physically assault the minister.
While Mofaz was walking to a community center in the Neveh Dekalim settlement, residents shouted "traitor" and "resign." One could also hear a common refrain, "Jews don't expel Jews, but if you're going to expel us, we'll expel you."
Mofaz's security detail moved him away from the community center, and a meeting scheduled to take place there was canceled when residents refused to allow it to take place. Mofaz then left the area, but later said he wanted to look the settlers in the eyes and listen to their concerns.
Mofaz previously had met with residents of the nearby Ganei Tal settlement, where all of the complaints echoed the same theme - the government is not prepared for the evacuation, or at the very least has yet to prepare housing for settlers who will be evacuated.
