According to an Interview with german DER SPIEGEL,
british Professor Peter Willetts, Professor for Global
Politics at London City University, claimed, that the
CIA knew since the summit G 8 in Genoa about a
possible terror threat in the U.S. by "Al-Quaeda".
Apparently he came to the conclusion by doing his own
research:

The Military ordered in Italy in July 2001 to install
a missile defence system, named "Sword" at Genoa's
airport to deter airborne attacks.
According to DER SPIEGEL, Willets contacted the
Financial Times with a letter about his research.

Willits did not explain, why he did come forward with
his knowledge right now.

Willets wrote Readings like "Transnational Actors and
International Organisations in Global Politics" or
"The Conscience of the World’".
In November 2000, Willits was awarded research funding
from the Department of International Development
(DFID), congratulated by UN secretary oifi Annan (see
above).

The most interesting thing to me is that the CIA researched on Al-Quaida at Bush's request ( yes, that's wat Willetts says - Dubya personally). The findings were summarized in the famous August memo. And - most important - Bush admitted in passing on his press conference at April 13 that he was warned of an attack at the Genua summit. So he was aware of the surface-to-air missiles in Genua.

Up to now, the Spiegel has dismissed even the most careful LIHOP approaches. I don't know why, but a German saying comes into my mind: The rats are leaving the sinking ship.

It says "this information everybody could have obtained on medienanalyse-international.de at least since August 12th, 2002: the missile batteries in Genova - which for sure are no evidence for any Al-Quida threat, but were only a preparation for an alleged threat. But to differ between this the "Spiegel" is not able to ..."

To say it clear and loudly: If Mr. Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld are the perpetrators, it makes no difference if they (knowing about what is to come) do preparations (stingers in Genova) or if they claim to have been warned only partially (August 6th) and so on.

These are all red herrings leading to the same old story "we could not connect the dots, we had some information, but not clear enough"

It is boring to follow their allged board of informations. Look what they did and what they sould hve done. Not to what they allegedly thought and waht they allegedly might have done if they would have had some more information.

Please excuse grammar mistakes. The security measures in Genua are nothing new, medienanalyse is right on that. But that Bush mentioned Genua in connection with the August memo is interesting. I think this could hang him. And I'm a bit surprised that the Spiegel quotes (respectfully) a scientist with a LIHOP attitude. This has never happened before. The wind changes its direction.



G-8 summit in Genua and 9/11

What did the president of the US know about possible terrorist attacks before 9/11? A british professor presents a new piece of evidence: At the G-8 summit in Genua in July 2001 there were surface-to-air missiles deployed after terror warnings from intelligence agencys.

Hamburg. Peter Willets is a watchful reader of newspapers. The sociologist and professor of global politics has specialised on NGO's and followed the media reports on the summit where the eight biggest industrialized countries met on July 20-22, 2001. "These heavy military devices could hardly be used against globalization critics or violent demonstrators" he told Spiegel Online.

The Genua summit was indeed one of the best protected meetings ever. The newspapers reported in detail which measures were taken to protect the leaders against thousands of demonstrators. But their reports included a possible attack of an arabic potentate like Saddam Hussein to erase the ruling elite of the world.

Surface-to-air-missiles at the G-8 summit in Genua

These fears were amplified by the boss of Russian president Wladimir Putin's bodyguards. Jewgenij Murow expressed his misgivings shortly before the summit that Osama bin Laden could launch an attack. So the meeting was moved to the cruising ship "European Vision" which was idling in the Bay of Genua. The ship was equipped with steel chains against under-water torpedo attacks.

20000 policemen, soldiers, froshmen, explosive experts, snipers and terror specialists were engaged to protect Bush, Schroeder and their colleagues from Canada, UK, France, Italy, Japan and Russia. Train stations were closed, naval traffic was halted. Trucks were only allowed to use the highways around the city. The airport was closed for four days.

But there was one thing which electrified Willetts two months later - after 9/11: To prevent a possible attack from the air, the Italian military had deployed surface-to-air missiles, type "Sword", around the harbour of Genua. In addition, three helicopters were circling in the air permanently.

His conclusion: The US government must have reckoned with the possibility of air attacks earlier than admitted in public.

"Nobody noticed"

While doing further research privately, Willetts found official White House documents, articles in the Washington Post and BBC online reports containing hints that the CIA was already examining the threat of an Al Qaida attack against the US. This fact is meanwhile examined by the 9/11 commission, too. Willetts: "The CIA didn't start the investigation on it's own, but on Bush's request." The results were summarized in the CIA memo delivered to Bush at August 6th, 2001. Bush admitted this on his weekly press conference on April 13th, 2004, but "nobody noticed because he mentioned Genua shortly in passing".

Willetts quotes a reader's letter to the Financial Times. When he was asked on his request at the press conference, Bush answered: "I asked for the assessment because there were a lot of intelligence reports dealing with the threat from overseas. In part it had to do with the Genua summit I intended to take part. At this point I wanted to make sure that we are careful at home, too." On the same press conference Bush said that the scenario "Osama bin Laden hijacks an airplane" was seen as a possible type of attack.

Why didn't Bush take into account the possibility of an air attack in the US if he was informed about the security measures in Genua, wonders Willetts.

The professor sees a lot of jigsaw pieces and doesn't want to draw conclusions. But nevertheless, he is astonished.
