Human wrongs to rights - life imprisonment for talking
One of the first English signs one encounters on arrival at Yaounde airport in Cameroon reads: "Persons making inappropriate comments concerning hijacking, carriage of weapons or explosives or pose a threat against air transport will be prosecuted. Penalty: life imprisonment."
Yaoundé was thus an interesting choice for the 12th All African Human Rights Moot Court Competition.
The message at the airport sums up the world order since September 11 2001. But the competition also comes at a time when Africa is close to establishing an African Human Rights Court, under the auspices of the African Union. Thirteen states have ratified the protocol to establish the court. Fifteen nations have to sign before the tribunal can have legal authority.
