"If Cheney & Co. Had Really Plotted the 9/11 Attacks ..."
Excerpt from new book by Matt Taibbi

http://www.alternet.org/mediaculture/85723/

But according to 9/11 Truth lore, the financial patrons of democratic government were game for exactly that sort of gamble. According to the movement, the Powers That Be in the year 2000 spent $200 million electing George Bush and Dick Cheney because they were insufficiently impressed with the docility of the American population. What was needed, apparently, was a mass distraction, a gruesome mass murder that would whip the American population into a war frenzy. The same people who had managed in the 2000 election to sell billionaire petro-royalist George Bush as an ordinary down-to-earth ranch hand apparently so completely lacked confidence in their own propaganda skills that they resorted to ordering a mass murder on American soil as a way of cajoling America to go to war against a second-rate tyrant like Saddam Hussein. As if getting America to support going to war even against innocent countries had ever been hard before!

The truly sad thing about the 9/11 Truth movement is that it's based upon the wildly erroneous proposition that our leaders would ever be frightened enough of public opinion to feel the need to pull off this kind of stunt before acting in a place like Afghanistan or Iraq. At its heart, 9/11 Truth is a conceit, a narcissistic pipe dream for a dingbat, sheeplike population that is pleased to imagine itself dangerous and ungovernable. Rather than admit to their own powerlessness and irrelevance, or admit that they've spent the last fifty years or so electing leaders who openly handed their tax money to business cronies and golfed in Scotland while middle America's jobs were being sent overseas, the adherents to 9/11 Truth instead flatter themselves with fantasies about a ruling class obsessed with keeping the terrible truth from the watchful, exacting eye of The People.

More at link, including a mythical planning meeting of PNAC in 1999.

1. I wonder if Matt ever entertained the idea that a religious organization
would want you to vomit your demons into a paper bag before he experienced it himself

2. Philip Zelikow and PNAC
disagree with that analysis in their articles about the "New Pearl Harbor"/"catastrophic attack"/"searing, molding event" as being a necessary catalyst for a pre-emptive war policy and draconian measures.

I put Zelikow's academic and other credentials above Taibbi's any day.

3. taibbi believes bush lies about everything ...
taibbi believes bush lies about everything ... except 9/11.

lefties/progressives who do this are an interesting case study.

they trash bush all day long and say he is incapable of telling the truth at any moment -- EXCEPT when he's talking about the one event that enabled him and his cronies to do all the evil things they have done.

at that time, he's being completely honest. and would never consider not telling the truth.

5. Thanks...that's perhaps one of the most laconic observations re this I've read...
"they trash bush all day long and say he is incapable of telling the truth at any moment -- EXCEPT when he's talking about the one event that enabled him and his cronies to do all the evil things they have done."

Bizarre, to say the least.

7. Please enumerate the events of 9/11 for which George W. Bush is our sole source of information.
Thank you in advance.

4. In the world according to Matt Taibbi, false flag attacks are so 20th century.
State sponsored terrorism serves no purpose today as it did with the Gulf of Tonkin incident, Operation Northwoods and Operation Gladio.

Because our ruling elite don't need no stinkin' false flag attacks anymore -- because public opinion is so easy to mold and the people are so powerless in any case -- we can now safely assume that there will be no more state sponsored terrorism, PNAC's assertions to the contrary be damned!

6. Imagine 9/11 Never Happened
1) In September 2001, the big news would have been:

a) the NORC ballot study showing that Gore in fact got more legal
votes in Florida, resulting in calls for impeachment of the Supreme
Court justices who handed the election to Bush

b) The Pentagon's inability to account for $2.3 Trillion in expenditures

2) Later, the ENRON meltdown and the Merrill Lynch scandal (they touted
overpriced stocks to their clients) would have led to questioning
whether corporate capitalism is inherently corrupt. (By the time
this news came out, America was too shell-shocked to care. We'd already
recovered from our 9/11 financial panic, and after the collapse of the
Twin Towers, the collapse of ENRON seemed no big deal.)

3) Afghanistan would not be the opium farm it is today

4) Bush would have had no mandate to invade Iraq, no mandate to take away
our rights

5) News media would not have given Bush wartime immunity from criticism
and his very dubious "election" to a second term (dubious because of
dirty tricks and electronic shenanigans) would not have been plausible.
