U.S. BTS: Last Known Flights Of 9/11 Planes Took Place Nine Months Before 9/11; None For AA 77

According to a Freedom of Information Act reply from the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics, the last known pre-9/11 flights for three of the four aircraft involved in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 took place in December, 2000, nine months before the attacks. No pre-9/11 flight information is available for these planes during 2001.

No pre-9/11 final flight information was provided for American Airlines flight 77 (N644AA).

U.S. Code of Federal Regulations requires carriers to provide on-time data for their commercial aircraft on a monthly basis.

Title 14 § 234.4 Reporting of on-time performance.

(a) Each reporting carrier shall file BTS Form 234 “On-Time Flight Performance Report” with the Office of Airline Information on a monthly basis ... and shall contain the following information:

(1) Carrier and flight number.
(2) Aircraft tail number.
(3) Origin and Destination airport codes.

1. Wrong.
N612UA, which operated United 175, was seen in both New York and Los Angeles during 2001: http://www.airliners.net/search/photo.search?regsearch=N612UA

N334AA, which operated American 11, was spotted in both Chicago and Stockholm during 2001: http://www.airliners.net/search/photo.search?regsearch=N334AA

N644AA, which operated American 77, was spotted in both Miami and Boston during 2001: http://www.airliners.net/search/photo.search?regsearch=N644AA

N591UA, which operated United 93, was spotted at Newark on September 8th 2001: http://www.airliners.net/photo/United-Airlines/Boeing-757-222/0188153/L/

And that's just from one photo-site, I wouldn't be surprised if you could find more on other sites, especially those accepting lower standard images.

Also, here's a fun exercise (hat tip to the JREF crew):

Go to the BTS inquiry page. (http://www.bts.gov/xml/ontimesummarystatistics/src/dstat/OntimeSummaryDepatures.xml)

Check "All statistics".

N612UA regularly operated Flight 175 out of San Francisco, so choose SFO as the Origin Airport.

Choose United Airlines as the airline.

Check September for the month.

Check All Days to see information for all of September.

Check 2001 for the year.

Click Submit. And wait (that's a big query).

And lo and behold, N612UA is shown as having operated out of San Francisco at least 4 times during the month of september.

2. Equally interesting is that I've read that some of the 9/11

planes were still in use AFTER they supposedly crashed.

4. Yes, I've just recently read that same thing . . . . four years later, was it????
Presumably they would have had some insurance coverage for the planes -- ??

Though, I guess, we're supposed to believe that "terrarist" attacks absolved

insurance companies?
