Two Theories to Explain Bush's Behaviour in the Classroom on 9/11
Edited on Wed Jul-27-05 05:17 PM by spooked911
this is a spin-off of this thread:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=125&topic_id=49414&mesg_id=49414

Basically, as everyone knows, Bush sat in an elementary school classroom reading a story about a pet goat while the twin towers were attacked and burned and hundreds of Americans died. Oddly, he didn't leave the room immediately upon learning of the second tower and when the reading exercise was over, he didn't rush out of the room, but lingered on, socializing. Ari Fleischer had held up a sign saying "don't say anything yet"-- fine, but why didn't he get out of the classroom more quickly to address the growing emergency?

Yet according to Paul Thompson's timeline, Bush left the classroom sometime after 9:20am and at 9:29am, gave a speech. Only at 9:34am was Bush rushed out of the school with fears for his safety.

Okay, so WHY didn't Bush's secret service detail rush him out of the classroom when it was clear two towers were attacked and this was no accident?

"(After 9:30 a.m.): Secret Service Finally Rushes Bush Out of School
Kevin Down, a Sarasota police officer, recalls that immediately after President Bush's speech concludes, "The Secret Service agent out from the school and We're under terrorist attack, we have to go now." The motorcade departs a few minutes later."

This whole scene has struck a great many people as odd, and there has been no good explanation for this sequence of events.

The key point here is that there is good evidence that the Pentagon was not attacked at 9:47am, or 9:45am, or 9:42am, or even 9:37am as the final time settled on by the 9/11 commission.

Rather, there is strong evidence from several different sources that the Pentagon was hit between 9:31am and 9:32am, five to six minutes earlier than even the earliest time officially admitted.

This would explain Bush's sudden departure from the school-- the secret service only realized Bush was in danger AFTER the Pentagon was attacked. This would also explain why they are lying about the time when the pentagon was hit.

Here are the two theories then:

1) the Secret Service detail in charge of Bush's security thought the WTC attack was a limited event a la the Oklahoma City bombing and therefore only realized the extent of the attacks when the Pentagon was hit. That's when they rushed Bush out of the school.

2) a deeper and darker theory centers on the idea that it is likely that the Secret Service detail in charge of Bush's security knew there were other hijacked planes besides the ones that crashed into the WTC towers. Thus, why didn't they think Bush was in danger earlier? One explanation is that the SS had foreknowledge of something happening at the WTC but didn't know about the Pentagon. Therefore the SS was taken by surprise and only realized the extent of the attack when the Pentagon was hit. Foreknowledge of the WTC hits would explain the lack of urgency in getting Bush out of danger when only those attacks had happened.

1. Spooked. He didn't run out of the school. If you watch the full length
video, he stood in front of the schools for a bit, socializing. Also remember that he left Florida without a jet escort. He didn't have one for close to an hour later. There was no rushing and no obvious effort to protect him like they did Cheney. Even going up the ramp on Air Force One, he walked alone, turned and waved. It was only after he got on the plane that the secret service joined him.

2. Hmm-- I don't know, maybe they had to keep up some pretense of normality?
Either none of it makes any sense or the SS had precise knowledge of the threat. I would guess the latter.

3. On the other hand, when Air Force One took off-- it went straight up
full-speed like a rocket, according to reports.

Perhaps the Air Force pilots were more concerned with Bush's safety than the secret service?

been for show.

And yes, it did climb quickly, but I didn't get a feeling about urgency when Bush arrives at the plane. I posted the video on this board a couple of months ago, and if you wish to see it, please let me know and I'll post it for you.

5. So, can you explain Bush and his secret service that morning?
How did they know Bush was in no danger?

6. can we develop consensus on a few things about this incident?
Can we develop consensus on a few things about this incident?

There is evidence that:
1. Bush knew that a hijacked plane had hit the Pentagon before he left for the school. It has been confirmed that when the President travels the Secret Service has a group with him that has connections to the FAA and monitors what is going on. They clearly would have been contacted about a hijacked plane that hit the WTC at 8:46, well before Bush left for the school. A reporter also confirmed this.

2. Bush learned that a second hijacked airplane had hit WTC2 at 9:03 soon after he got to the school. Its known the Secret Service would have known it immediately when it happened. Maybe before he entered the school.
The well known incident where Card whispered in his ear may have been about something other than an initial notification of WTC2 being hit.

3. In spite of Bush and the Secret Service knowing that 2 hijacked planes had hit WTC1 and WTC2, Bush stayed around reading books with kids and other delays in leaving.

4. If the U.S. was really under attack to an unknown extent, the President should have wanted to be in contact with Cheney, the military, etc. to help coordinate the defense.

5. If the U.S. was really under attack and the President was at an announced event, it is likely he might be targeted and the Secret Service is supposed to insure his safety in such circumstnces.

Is there agreement about these? If not, which?

So what does this leave us to explain the seemingly very strange behavior of both Bush and the Secret Service?

9. I think we agree
my contention is that either Bush's SS detail was caught completely by surprise about the Pentagon hit, and then when it happened finally realized Bush could be in danger OR they knew about the plot completely and thus had no concerns about his safety. I think it is one of these two possibilities, there though are other possible explanations.

10. Can't really agree with most of that
"Bush knew that a hijacked plane had hit the Pentagon before he left for the school."
I think you mean WTC, not Pentagon.

"They clearly would have been contacted about a hijacked plane that hit the WTC at 8:46, well before Bush left for the school."
Where was Bush at 8:46?
"(8:46 a.m.): Bush, Some Aides Reportedly Still Unaware of Flight 11 Hijack
President Bush is traveling through Sarasota, Florida, in a motorcade when the first WTC attack occurs. According to the 9/11 Commission, “no one in the White House or traveling with the president knew that had been hijacked . Immediately afterward, duty officers at the White House and Pentagon began notifying senior officials what had happened.” However, according to reports, Bush is not notified about the crash until his motorcade reaches its destination, even though there is a secure phone in his vehicle for just this type of emergency, and even though others in the motorcade are notified."

"Its known the Secret Service would have known it immediately when it happened. Maybe before he entered the school."
"(Between 8:55-9:00 a.m.): Bush First Told About WTC Crash?; Suggests Accident
President Bush's motorcade has arrived at Booker Elementary School and Bush enters the school with his entourage."
He entered the school before United 175 crashed.

"other delays"
He prepared and then gave a speech about the attacks.

"If the U.S. was really under attack to an unknown extent, the President should have wanted to be in contact with Cheney, the military, etc. to help coordinate the defense."
Whilst preparing the 9:29 speech, Bush
"...also speaks on the phone to advisers, first calling National Security Adviser Rice, then Vice President Cheney, then New York Governor George Pataki."

11. I believe his secret service detail were in on it. This wasn't the
only time in our history when the secret service didn't follow routine. In Dealey Plaza, they weren't following the protocol needed to protect Kennedy.

7. What evidence is there that the Pentagon was hit at 9:31?
I haven't seen such. There were reporters at the site and they have
time clocks, etc. so they should know.
Was there no seismic at all for the Pentagon crash?

The 9:31 time doesn't mesh with the report regarding the C130 that was reported just taking off at that time and supposedly followed the plane in.

There was also reports that said the crash was 9:43, such as reported by Danish press I think.

The FAA ATC report regarding the planes downward spiral also doesn't seem consistent with the 9:31 time.

Were several of these reported times likely wrong?

8. The actions at the school have always bothered me.
You have a sitting president in a vulnerable location during an attack on the country.

He's at an event that's been well publicized, everyone who cares to find out will know where he is that morning.

The first plane hits the towers and people believe initially that there's been a tragic accident, then the second plane hits. Suddenly everyone realizes that it is a terrorist attack.

Maybe I've watched too many B movies, but surely the first thing that the secret service should be doing whilst the country is under attack is getting the president to a safe location.

The most important question here isn't what was said the * or why Air Force One took off at such a steep angle, etc. The most important question is Why did the secret service believe that the school was a secure location?
