Morford -- Long Live The 9/11 Conspiracy!
http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/gate/archive/2006/03/29/notes032906.DTL&type=printable

Here is your must-read for the month. Here is your oh-my-God-I'm-sending-this-piece-to-every-smart-person-I-know hunk of outstanding, distressing, disquieting media bliss.

Here it is: an absolutely exceptional inside scoop on the white-hot world of Sept. 11 conspiracy theories, writ large and smart by Mark Jacobson over at New York magazine, and it's mandatory reading for anyone and everyone who's ever entertained the nagging thought that something -- or rather, far more than one something -- is deeply wrong with the official line on what actually happened on Sept. 11.

....

Of course, there is another option. There is another way out. You may, as is the standard cultural default, simply ignore it all, scoff and roll your eyes and shrug it all off because it's just too bleak and distasteful to entertain the idea that the dark Sept. 11 thread winds all the way through the NSA and the FBI and the White House and the Project for the New American Century and Dick Cheney's mangled soul and God only knows where else.

9. Funny. It's so much easier to keep the blinders on. Our pure little
government would NEVER do such a thing (depsite the mountains of evidence of past and present attempts and successes)

4. Give that up, and all that's left is spiritual numbness, emotional stasis
"But then again, no. You have to look. You have to try. Knowledge is power, and while the truth may be spurious and slippery and messy and deep, the pursuit of it is just about the only thing we have left. Give that up, and all that's left is spiritual numbness, emotional stasis and death. So what are you waiting for?"

He ends with this nice summary of the true cost of denial.

12. We'll never get anywhere with the 9/11 stuff and heres why.
The official story is endorsed and fully believed by the bulk of elected officials on both sides of the aisle. No matter how much truth is uncovered these officials and their quislings and blind faith followers will always call us Conspiracy nuts, left wing fringe loopies, tinfoiling freaks etc... I mean how many here have had a label like that applied to them for seeking or speaking truth about 9/11? How many here have been told they are helping us to lose elctions by making us all look bad, unpatriotic lunatics?

Its fucking bullshit, and it has led me down a path of more and more bitterness not just for our party but all government in general. I no longer trust or believe anyone in government. I start off as thinking they are lieing or obfuscating and try to work backwards towards truth from that. With the exception of maybe 4 or 5 officials that is how I feel about them now. They have their followers to thank for that as well if your entire plan for getting America and the world out of the cluster fuck that it is in by running as the lesser of two evils, well you might win but you're still just a lesser evil.

More importantly by labeling with broad brushes just about anyone who says the official story (the one that most elected Dems agree with, the whitewash comission) is a load of shit meant to pacify the very people it has (namely those who do the labeling) you are perpetuating the status quo, you are enabling the terror of PNAC, Big Money Corpos, and religous fanaticism (the Judeo Christian kind as well the other more "familiar" ones). All so your boy or girl can win.. and do what? Form more whitewash comissions filled with the rich and well off? Like they wont fucking lie their collective asses off to protect their assets? Talk about believing in fairy tales...

Not that this post will change a mind or open one or even be read... but teh constant trouncing by conservative/moderate Dems on any who question the party line on 9/11 could very well kill this party, and perhaps deservedly so.

14. Umm...
I no longer trust or believe anyone in government. I start off as thinking they are lieing or obfuscating and try to work backwards towards truth from that.

Starting from assumptions instead of evidence is the exact reason people who engage in this type of behaviour get called "Conspiracy nuts, left wing fringe loopies, tinfoiling freaks etc..." as you put it.

22. Ah, grasshopper ...
and what are your assumptions when it comes to 19 ragtag Muslims directed by a guy hiding in a cave vs. a Western mil/intel/corporate covert operation when it comes to 9/11?

And if you simply threw away your assumptions, which of these two groups of suspects would have:

1) the greater means,
2) more opportunity, and
3) the more compelling motive?

And what if you applied your same default assumptions about questioning the 9/11 official conspiracy theory --

-- to Watergate, Iran/Contra, the Gulf of Tonkin, election fraud, the Abu Ghraib abuses, the Gitmo abuses, Bush's illegal spying program, the Plame outing, the Abramoff scandal, Iraq's supposed WMDs, hedge vs. mutual fund scams, the EPA's new child mercury standards, every bullshit terra alert, Afghanistan's post-invasion opium production explosion, torture rendition, the School of Americas, historic and current US/Latin America intervention, the Saddam statue psyop, Halliburton's no-bid cost-plus contracts, Operation Northwoods, MK Ultra, the U2 incident, the Teapot Dome scandal, the CIA/crack connection, Hurricane Katrina, the post-9/11 NYC air quality cover up, Agent Orange, depleted uranium, global warming, asbestos and tobacco industry science, Enron, the California "energy crisis", the S&L "crisis", etc, etc, etc?

Who would benefit from your default assumptions and your lack of critical reasoning?

Of course, I don't expect a serious answer.

25. You mean you trust the government?
I don't get any further then "there are a few good guys there".

There's ample reason to distrust the govt. Once you have arrived at that point it is not "assumption" but only logical to "start off thinking they are lying and work your way backwards to the truth".

17. Oh you know how they like to turn it around. They'll say the poll is
invalid because its online, they'll say that small of a portion of the US does not mean anything, they'll say its the MSM and why would a good Conspiracy nut ever trust what they say (and further the argument by the well known anti-conspiracy flip of "they probably rigged it up just to further divide the left").

As for me personally that poll made me happier than any other poll in the last 5 years... and I cant believe they canceled the Asner spot! Just because one of the whitewashers boo-hoo'd and then probably poo poo'd all over anyone who'd dare to question their authority.

I am equally as pessimistic about the truth ever being realized and acknowledged, at least in this country, for two reasons:

1. People simply do not want to know the truth.

2. The root cause of 9/11 goes beyond the Bush administration or a small faction therein. It goes even beyond bi-partisan complicity in the cover-up and whitewash. This is about entrenched and insulated, unaccountable and absolute power and the corruption that results.

Because of the 2nd reason, a groundswell at the grass roots level is the only hope. Unfortunately, the 1st reason, among others, makes such a groundswell extremely unlikely. It won't be until the economic and security catastrophic realities brought about by the policies justified by 9/11 fully play out that people are moved to action. By that time, it will be too late.

There are very few lights in the wilderness. The 911 mess and the stolen elections will be papered over just as was the JFK assassination and the Wellstone death. Nothing to see here, move along citizen. I am rapidly approaching the tune out phase.

19. Katrina = 9/11. All the proof anyone needs for 9/11 LIHOP or MIHOP.
"If Katrina proved the government was willing to let people die, right there on TV, why should 9/11 have been any different?"

Katrina = 9/11 or 9/11 = Katrina.

Katrina was the turning point that connected the dots as to the motives and goals of the Bush cabal.

After all, WHO benefits?

BUSH CO.

Time to shake off the denial and GET REAL.

We're talking Criminals here-one and all.

24. I agree
The Katrina response was, to me, the nail in the coffin on this. It proved beyond any doubt that this administration was willing and able to hurt it's citizens, either by neglect or will. And, that it didn't care if the whole world watched on live TV while it happened.

Talk about in your face.

oh but they were having an exercise on 9/11 and everyone got confused.

The Vigilant Guardian war game was discussed in chapter 1, footnote 116 of the 9/11 Commission Report:
