9/11 conspiracy theorists gather at LA conference

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - They wore T-shirts asking "What Really Happened?," snapped up DVDs titled "9/11; The Great Illusion," and cheered as physicists, philosophers and terrorism experts decried the official version of the Sept. 11 attacks that shook America to its core.

Some 1,200 people gathered at a Los Angeles hotel on the weekend for what organizers billed as the largest conference on the plethora of conspiracy theories that see the 2001 attacks on Washington and New York as, at best, official negligence, and at worst an orchestrated U.S. attempt to incite world war.

"There are so many prominent people who are incredibly well-respected who have stated that the evidence is overwhelming that 9/11 was an inside job," syndicated radio talk show host Alex Jones told a news conference.

"There are hundreds of smoking guns that people need to be made aware of," said Jones, calling for the impeachment of President George W. Bush and charging that mainstream media had been slow to cover the growing movement of 9/11 skeptics.

2. I hope the article sticks around
Articles on DU regarding un-official 911 Conspiracy Theories tend to disappear.
Hope this one bucks that trend.

12. "trained at American military bases"
Edited on Sun Jun-25-06 04:43 PM by RedSock
Most are convinced ... the hijackers were trained at American military bases ...

---------------------------------

Now why would these crazy people believe something like that?

Oh, yeah, because several military sources (including a high-ranking U.S. Navy source at the Pentagon) gave that information to the FBI -- and it was reported by Newsweek on September 15, 2001.

I have the msnbc printout that names the five hijackers who "received training at secure U.S. military installations in the 1990s."

God forbid the writer of this article actually know a little bit about what she is covering.

EDIT: I fleshed out this post a bit and emailed it to a generic feedback thing at Reuters' main site. I wonder if anyone will respond.

13. "trained at American military bases"
According to Nafeez Ahmed, Senator Bob Graham asked the DoD to check into the
question of whether those trained by the US military were the same people as
the alleged hijackers, and the only answer he got was that the issue was complex
and DoD could not answer the question.

14. at the time
an Army spokesman said they were simply other people with the same names.

when asked for proof of this claim (or to talk to some of these people with the unfortunate names), he refused.

and then the media forgot about it.

15. re: same names
Simply other people with the same names? Odds might give you one but not five. This is mathematically impossible!

16. I was at the LA 9/11 and the Neo-Con Agenda conf . . .
It was very good and very worth attending. I'm writing a summary and my impressions, and what new things I learned. I will post when I'm done. Truly a great experience.
