71. I also don't think Kerry was as good as last week
And Bush was better than last week. Bush was shrill and defiant at times, which I don't like, but others who like the macho stuff do. I think it was closer to a tie. I wish Kerry had done a better job on the environment. He could have eviserated
Bush on that with more facts and he didn't. That is a totally winnning issue and Bush was not fully refuted. And he should have beenmore emphatic about the embryos that will be discarded anyway. It was mentioned but kind of got lost.

Last week it was 90 to 10. This week it is more like 60 to 40.

33. Yeah...stone me to hell...! It's not that he's doing well, its that the
format allows him to "look" that way. Kerry seems on the "defensive' to me. Also it seems Chimp is getting all the "air time!"

I know...stone me..but whatever is going on tonight is terrible. We need a SCANDAL...gotta have some help from outside after this debate.

But, what do I know. If the Press has decided the Chimp has to go...Kerry will be declared the winner and I won't have to worry about how he did or what the format was tonight that made me feel I was watching a Yale Debate with "Second Classmen" in a gentlemanly discussion of their differences...

I have my one ear listening while I type because I was shouting profanities at the TV and if I keep my fingers busy I don't throw things

I hope the press will be good..I look forward to the next debate..and more scandals coming out inbetween to give us more stuff to throw at the Chimp

He could be declared the winner because he did better than expected at this point. He even seems to have gotten rid (sorta) of the slur.

However, Kerry is also doing better than last week. Kerry was generally great. I didn't hear him on the environment and both their stem cell answers were crappy, but no one's gonna hit every ball out of the park.

60. No, he shouted most of the time
Edited on Fri Oct-08-04 09:47 PM by Ravenswood
He kept jumping out of his seat. There were quite a few awkward moments. He was as defensive as he was last week.

I think the only reason he may have given a better impression to some is because the split screen wasn't used much at all (at least not on C-Span). His eyes were darting around and he was smirking as much as ever. He also laughed in Kerry's face at the beginning, while Kerry was answering a question.

I didn't vote for him in 2000 and am not voting for him next month, but if I were undecided his performance tonight would have made up my mind. He doesn't come across as likable or in touch with people at all.

Except that this week he lost his temper much easier. The guy's pretty much hopeless. More circular arguments and "terra" threats. It was extremely weak when he started with the "liberal" talk. It was cheap. He sounded like a pundit.

63. For him
yes. Of course Kerry tore him apart. And, I haven't laughed so hard in a long time as I did listening to * defend his environmental record. I truly heard the groans and screams across the country as he spoke about that. (Was his "accent" especially strong tonight - since he's in "Mazzoura").

But, I kept trying to put myself in the Joe idiot shoe who supports him and I think he did much better. Maybe the pundits will call it a draw. It's not like it's about subtance or anything. But Kerry really did wonderfully. He's staying consistant in his style and approach and engaged the audience. More presidential, I'd say. duh.

64. Sort of
In the first half, he was truly frightening -- shrill, angry, raging. Whether that was staged and deliberate, or shades of his petulant performance last week, who knows. Then he calmed down, which was equally frightening for how quickly he was able to do that. If this was scripted, then I don't know what the message is.

On balance, he did pretty badly, and I suspect the fact checkers are going to substantiate this. Clearly his messages were pretty much intended for his base, for whom this madman can do no wrong. That said, I can see some people shifting in his direction because they don't understand the nuance in issues or that there are myriad reasons a senator chooses to vote for or against legislation, reasons that might have nothing to do with the overall value of a particular bill. So, for this audience, yes, he did reasonably well. For those of us here on DU or who are otherwise a tad more incisive than the average fundie, then it was a horrifying performance that bodes ill for the next four years if he wins.

his head-bobbing thing was annoying. He started to look like a bobblehead on occasion.

Did anyone else notice him grinding his teeth? It's a tell-tale sign of someone who's high on cocaine.

What I wished Kerry had jumped on about Bush's rebuttal to the abortion issue was Bush's comment about being committed to the sanctity of life. If that's the case, Kerry should have said, then how does he reconcile executing more convicted felons than any other governor in the history of Texas? If life is so precious. I suppose he's just referring to embryos. whatever!
