Kerry dedicates energy speech to Christopher Reeve
Reeve had called Kerry just Saturday.

SANTA FE, N.M. - Sen. John Kerry dedicated his speech on energy independence Monday to actor Christopher Reeve, whom the Democratic presidential candidate remembered as a passionate environmentalist whose courageous fight against paralysis was "an inspiration to all of us."

<snip>

Kerry, who knew the "Superman" actor for about 15 years through family and dedication to the same causes, said Reeve left him a long voice mail on Saturday thanking him for campaigning on the possibilities of a cure for conditions like his.

"The excitement in his voice was just really palpable, and he was so thrilled about where the discussion of stem cell research had come to," said the Massachusetts senator. Kerry has promised to expand stem cell research if elected president and mentioned Reeve's struggle while explaining his position in Friday's presidential debate.

"Given what a passionate advocate he was for the environment, this speech, these words, these thoughts are for Chris," Kerry said in a soft voice before launching into a booming and harsh critique of the president.

Kerry said he had been with Reeve on Earth Day in 1995, just three weeks before the horse-riding accident that caused his paralysis. He said Reeve had been an active outdoorsman, who enjoyed activities such as sailing and cycling that Kerry often does.

1. Ohhhhh.... here come the tears again.....

While I know some think having such strong feelings for a celebrity one had never met is ridiculous, I argue strongly that with Reeve, at least the situation is far different. To me, Reeve represented such courage over adversity that he was everyone's role model. As such, we all had a vested interest in his progress and objectives.

RIP my dear friend...

On edit, if Reeve's family approves and the voicemail is not too personal, I hope Kerry will make the audio available.

3. Reeve is a bona fide hero
I agree with what you say about celebrities, but Reeve was not just another celebrity, he was a truly special human being.
