WingNut Talking Points - Why not...
expand upon the fine article... <http://www.democraticunderground.com/articles/04/10/12_eight.html> on the front page.

The point about not admitting any mistakes seems to me to be the one to elaborate upon. It is such a glaring flaw in his character and his message.

Admitting shortcomings is the bedrock of the Protestant faith. Lutherans recite the 'Brief Confession...' in the first five minutes of every church service.

If * is such a religious person, and if he is to be taken as one, then how can he be so stubborn as to not question any of his actions? His sheeple accept this with blind faith, of course, because he says he is religious. How could anyone question that?

Let's hammer this.

1. Good point
I've seen cars that say "Not Perfect-Just Forgiven" with the fish sign, so I take them to be fundamentalists. To be forgiven, don't you have to admit your mistakes?

3. Not according to Christianity, you don't.
All you need to do is believe that Jesus died for you sins and therefore they are forgiven. Period!

4. Even the fundagelicals...

...have a bit more nuance than that. I'll not bore you with a theological exposition, but it might be useful to read a general history of Christian ideas, such as Linwood Urban's A Short History of Christian Thought.

In brief, repentance -- the admission of sin and the sincere desire to not repeat it -- is key to redemption or forgiveness.

7. Thanks
this was my take on Christianity. Having been raised in the Methodist Church (a very liberal branch of it), we talked about being saved by grace and being saved by good works. As I recall, even those who believed only in saved by grace acknowledged that if someone was saved by grace they would not behave the same way they behaved before being 'saved'. But like I said, I was raised in a liberal Christian church, which seems to be an endangered species these days.

2. Methodists...
...of which * is one also recite a general confession as part of their worship service. As do the Episcopalians, among whom he was raised. He's familiar with the concept.

Ron Reagan summed it up best when he noted that his father believed God had placed him in office, but "considered that a responsibility, rather than a mandate."

5. If he admits a mistake, he knows it will appear in our ads

and he will get hammered for it. Bush knows if he admits a mistake, Democrats won't come out and say he's a great guy because of it. This is precisely why Clinton held his ground and didn't give an inch. This is how the game is played.

6. Correct...
...but his Christian base might have a problem with him playing politics instead of following his faith.

I dunno... I think most of the fundagelicals are...forgive me, but I can't resist... beyond redemption. They're one or two issue voters (abortion, getting "filth" off of TV, anti-gay, whatever) and they're going with the guy who addresses those issues.
