The Big Dawg's Getting Ready
SANTA FE, N.M. - President Clinton (news - web sites) can't put his recovering heart into John Kerry (news - web sites)'s election effort out on the campaign trail, but he is using his voice to help in the final weeks of the race.

Clinton regularly phones Kerry and his aides to offer advice, and he plans to tape a phone message that will be sent into voters' homes. Campaign officials say it's likely he'll also record radio advertisements, but his slow recovery from heart surgery is making it questionable whether he'll be able to do any physical campaigning.

Democrats who have spoken to Clinton say he is eager to get more involved, but his doctors and his wife are not sure he is strong enough to travel five weeks after he underwent quadruple bypass surgery.

One senior Democratic official who recently saw Clinton said the former president looked wan and reported that his recovery had been harder than he had expected. But Clinton told the official to begin planning a couple of events for the final days of the campaign.

2. Get on your body armor, Big Dawg, and join us in the fray
even if you can't get out on the trail.

People LOVE the Big Dawg, except a minority of sqawky freeper-types.

4. My dad had identical surgery and tried to come back too quickly
He had to return to the emergency room, was placed on a ventilator and had a 6 month setback. I knew the media was too optimistic in its projections of Clinton's return to the campaign trail. That operation is not the same for everyone, and nowhere nearly as routine as it was portrayed in early September. My father still has discomfort where the breastbone was broken, and where the veins removed from his legs, even after 6 years.
