Computer Junkies, is there a second Internet?
A dingus in my Theo class said today while we were discussing the debate:

"Technically, there is a second internet, he wasn't wrong"

Am I just horribly misinformed?

But yeah, I doubt the chimp would be able to know this.

1.) It involves education
and
2.) I'm shocked he found the first one. Give a infinite amount of chimps an infinite amount of computers and they'll write the world's greatest novel I guess.

3. Yes.
There is a relatively smaller and very private high-speed(incredibly so...) Internet that is accessible only to universities and scientific researchers.

Don't worry: Chimpy barely knows his own name. He wouldn't have known that.

13. Technically? yes
It's called Abilene and it's a basically a consortium of universities, businesses, and government agencies developing a network for ultrahigh speed collaborative research. It falls under the umbrella of the Internet2 project. Check it out here -> http://abilene.internet2.edu/

14. Yes, but that doesn't make Bush correct.
The Internet II exists, and IPv6 exists, and government networks exist.

But that is silliness. Bush was talking about something that the average person has access to. Suggesting that people go look on the Internets is stupid, not technically correct. Suggesting to a computer science person something similar might make sense.

I guess basically the president doesn't get to be correct by accident. The guy defending his statement is probably unswervable.

15. I teach Internet technology--
--and what you do have is a number of large, special purpose networks out there, such as the Pentagon's NIPRNet and SIPRNet (NIPR is unclassified, SIPR is for classified). But these don't qualify as 2nd or 3rd "internets" unless you're a clueless, knowledge-challenged guy named Dubya.
