Finally somebody has told kerry to quit wearing the stupid
kiddy biking stuff. the clothes is what made him look stupid on a bike or windsurfing, not the actual activity.

COOL:

NOT COOL:

then GWBush and his lackeys can eat sh**

2. Holy shit!
Kerry can ride a bike *and* talk on a cell phone at the same time.

The undecideds need to see photos comparing Kerry on a bike and bush's face after riding his bike. It would be a no-brainer.

3. I disagree
JK is a serious athlete, not a photo op poser.
I nearly fell off my chair when I first saw the picture of him with the helmet slung on the handlebars.

Quite frankly, I want this guy to have all his mental faculties in the event he takes a tumble. Wear the helmet!

If his campaign wants to control media coverage when he rides, that is another thing.

I'm sure as soon as he moved he put his helmet on.

I know it looks that way, but I saw the video this morning. I think he's just scratching his face or something. At first I thought it was a cell phone too.

It saddens me that this is an issue for ANYONE - especially those of us here at DU.

Crap like this just steals attention away from real issues.

10. Yes.
I have had big debates here on DU about the dorkiness of biking clothes. For those just going for a ride (not racing) biking clothes are undignified and hopelessly dorky.

Helmets are goofy-looking too. They may be necessary, but they are uncool.

27. That's a Yankee thang
I've lived up here in Michigan for ten years. These northern folks don't like to give up their shorts until the very last minute, until that very first snowflake falls. You see long sleeves with shorts all the time up here. We Texans think it's goofy, but we find ourselves doing it too! It's surprisingly comfortable in cold weather, especially on a bike.
:hi:

23. Yeah! Come on out here to California......
.....and get a good look at how people really dress when riding a bike.

In 2000 over 10,850,000 people voted for president in California.
In 2000 just over 1,200,000 people voted for president in Oklahoma.

In 2000 Gore won California by over 1.5 million votes.

You do the math. :)

18. I love Kerry... and I agree.
The bright spandex is not attractive to women, and not terribly macho to the average voter.

Let me explain. Right now. it's ALL ABOUT IMAGE. Kerry has to appeal to a broad group of voters, and the meme is "hunk vs. punk". Bush's manly :puke: photo of him looking like something in Cool Hand Luke, on his "ranch", is circulating, and it resonates well with the average folks.

Kerry is active and does tons of stuff.. just for now, until the election, dump the spandex.

Edited on Wed Oct-13-04 11:37 AM by MsTryska
and to be frank i always thought he was slightly dorky in his sports clips. but that's okay. He's president, not a stud, i told myself.

Well watching Diary of a Political Tourist on HBO the other night, Alexandra Pelosi caught him in full hockey gear warming up for a game. He was stretching.

And at one point, he got on the ice in pushup position, in his skates and stretched that way.

I got a flash of what Kerry might be like...as a man.

I've got a whole new perception now. and a huge crush.

i wish to god there were screen captures soemwhere on the web, but sadly, none. but there should be. i would make that my desktop.

an America Undercover special on HBO. it was made by Alexandra Pelosi - she's Nancy Pelosi's daughter, and in 2000, i think? she did On the road with george or something. Basically she got in with dubya's press corps and di her thing...

actually here, this may help a bit with background:

42. Yeah, that yellow jersey is all about the US Postal Service...
This is such a non-issue. Athletes let the weather dictate their choice of clothing. Athletes wear stretchy technical clothing to wick away sweat and keep from getting too cold or too hot. Athletes wear helmets because accidents can happen anytime and anywhere, no matter how careful you are.

If Kerry wore those clothes only for photo ops, you might have a point. However, he actually does go on long cycle rides. He really is an athlete.

Sid

46. Yummmmmms....
....I have to tell you, the more I look at Kerry, the better he looks. I love the navy blue bike clothes. IMO, he is a sexy guy.

BTW: I used to ride road races a VERY long time ago and knew a bit about bike riding back then. As I recall, when a rider's leg is extended in the down position the knee should be as seen in the photos of Kerry - just a slight flex. When I looked at the photos of Bush riding, IMO, it looks like no one took the time to properly fit the bike to him. He looks wrong IMO for a few reasons and one of them IMO is that the bike does not fit him. OK....he is a total idiot and usually looks dumb....but this did not help.
