Scrambling * 's transmitter - sorry, not that easy

(disclaimer: I used to work in radio frequency ID)

Many folks here have stated "Why doesn't Kerry just jam the signal going to *'s ear piece?" Here's one reason why:

I am guessing the signal is generated by a series of scrambled signals - i.e. one signal mixed into a second, with the results mixed into a third, etc. It's done via a series of algorithms, so it is very difficult to decode. Think of how a satellite TV card works, only much tougher to decode. Also, once a TV is solved it's simply a matter of the satellite company re-doing the code keys - that's why the cards go dead.

A simple frequency generator set to frequency "X" won't work in this case, unless by some coincidence the "arrived" value of the signal going to Chimpy happens to be all the same, i.e. 2 GHz followed by 2 GHz followed by 2 GHz, etc. Again, I'm guessing that the "demodulator" they use is descrambling multiple frequency sets - not just one.

Hope this helps - kinda.

2. Is that why they were asking reporters what their frequency was?

3. Not necessary - Bush does his own scrambling. nt

5. It's tough, it's a tough job
It took Kerry's camp twenty minutes to find in the first debate. ;)

8. Well it depends on the range of frequencies.
With current technology cell phones can be jammed, but different cell phones use different frequencies. This means that a given device has to be able to cope with many different frequencies. With current technology, this can be done. Some devices are even smart enough to know when a cell phone changes frequency (or they just do the brute force approach and jam them all).

Given this information, I don't know why one couldn't jam one frequency or a mix of frequencies.

11. I think it's because while cell phones use different frequencies,

they only use one a time. I'm not up at all on cell phone stuff, but I think (please, someone correct me if I'm wrong) they go from, for example, 800-875 MHz. That would be prtetty easy to get to, since they're not scrambled via a random generation sequence.

i remember once working at a Navy yard in Maine - we had to set up the RF stuff on the ships a mile out in the harbor, otherwise we started opening garage doors, turning on/off cell phones, disabling nurse call stations, etc.

Didn't make many friends that week... :)

12. There's a difference between intercepting and jamming..........
If you wanted to intercept the signal in order to listen in, it'd be next to impossible if they're using any kind of encryption and/or frequency hopping - BUT if you just wanted to disrupt the signal, you'd just need to jam the general frequency range that the device operates in, which isn't that hard to do. The thing is, that jamming might also interfere with some of the audio/visual equipment used in the production of the broadcast, so I don't know if it'd be feasible for Kerry's crew to do that.

Kerry's gonna kick his ass anyway.

Best case scenario would be for Kerry to totally annihilate the Chimp during the debate, THEN come forward with tapes of Chimp's earpiece prompts........
