On Hardball, Bush rep said Bush does NOT want abortion to be illegal.
Um....Is he giving the people MIXED MESSAGES on abortion? Does the pro-life movement know that Bush does NOT want abortion to be illegal?

6. If you think about it...
If abortion were made illegal the Repugs would be finished as a political party. Their fundie base votes on one issue - no legal abortion, no militant activism to GOTV.

disclaimer: I am not advocating the criminalization of abortion, I support women's control of reporductive rights in every way. I am just making a theoretical political point.

18. You are correct. That is why the GOP would not allow amendments
offered by strongly anti-abortion republicans to the late term abortion ban passed by Congress. The amendments were designed to bring the ban within the Constitutional parameters set by the Supreme Court in striking down similar State laws. The GOP leadership insisted that the law passed by Congress be identical to laws already declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. They wanted the issue, not the outcome.

7. It was hilarious
She just got done trashing Kerry by saying that he wouldn't speak out for what he really believed about abortion in the last debate. Then Tweety asks "Does Bush want to make abortion illegal?" "Um...er...he's pro life...um...er...it's not about making it illegal...um...er"

19. I thought Kerry's statement on abortion in the last debate
was absolutely the correct answer; that he could not push his beliefs on the entire nation. I do wish he would have added that NO PRESIDENT should.

I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Rethugs have no shame. They don't care what they say anymore. Someone should go over to the freeper website and post that tidbit.

11. Of course he doesn't want it to be illegal.
Because he knows that as soon as it's made illegal, people will want it to be made legal again. This is what happened in Portugal; it's what happens whenever abortion is banned.

It's in the right wing's best interest to keep abortion as a wedge issue. If abortion is banned, the right wing will no longer be able to use the issue to get the votes of social conservatives. If they really wanted to ban abortion as opposed to using it as a political weapon, they would have banned it a long time ago.

12. Agreed.
And just how dumb are the single-issue anti-abortion voters who reliably turn up to vote R? Repukes control all three branches of government. Don't these people ever stop and ask themselves why abortion is still legal. No way in hell are the daughters of the country club repukes ever going back to coat hangers or clandestine trips to Mexico. They do an excellent job of paying lip service to the fundies while they laugh like hell behind their backs.

20. The difference between the US's and Portugal's anti-abortion laws
The Portuguese people voted--in a referendum--to outlaw abortion; the US would take the power out of the hands of the people and put it in the hands of a handful of judges and/or politicians.

13. SHE OUTRIGHT LIED to the public about Kerry not supporting the ban on
'partial-birth-abortion'!

Kerry supports the ban except in cases where the life of the mother is at risk.

As for the repukes, we can just die as long as the fetus lives!

16. that's why Matthews is the best of these TV pundits
He sits back and waits with the tough question the viewer wants to see asked, then springs it. He knew she would have a hard time with it, and let her hang herself.
