1. Also
make sure that new degree isn't in computer science...

It's not just lack of education that drives jobs away.

3. Yeah I thought that advice was SO fucking helpful
(not!) Lost your job? Just go to community college!!!

Asshat. You STILL have to buy food and pay your bills, you bastard.

Community college is great, but it's not for everyone (depending on what you want to do) and not everyone CAN go to college.

What an out of touch tool.

4. I know someone being re-educated
For the past 3 years, she has been going to school full time and working evenings and weekends at a part time job and still can't find the money for the mortgage. Forget about sending the kids to college.

Rafterman, my brother has a B.S. in computer science and an MBA. His job WAS a software engineer. He lost his job due to downsizing.

His job wasn't outsourced since the downsizing happened a couple of years ago. But now his former telecommunications employer is outsourcing their IT to India.

Education is no longer the answer.

Edited for a typo.

I'm doing a research project. How old is your brother? Is he white? How much did he have in his 401k?

I'm soooo close to proving that middle age white men's 401k's were "downsized". Can't let the average white man have a comfy retirement! Make him spend that cash!

Edited to add that 401k's are a pyramid scheme. Don't let them try to convince you otherwise.

21. I agree, it's all about keeping the value of the mutual funds up
and it constantly has to be fed from the bottom. The problem is going to be when all the baby boomers start taking money out of their 401k's at retirement. You'd be better off rolling whatever you have in your 401k's into your own IRA account that you can invest in any way you want - stocks, pork bellies, whatever. 3/4 of all mutual funds do worse than the S&P 500. You think you can't pick a blend of investments that do at least as well, without all the damn fees? Come on!

25. Seems to be going up with the price of oil
Depends on how high you think oil will go. Gold's the highest it's been in 6 months. You'd make a nice profit if you sold now. If you got it for $221, you must have bought it more than a year ago, so you'd only have to pay capital gains rate on the tax.

You are poorly educated, and that's why you are unemployed. That's what I heard the a$$hole say. I have a BS and MS in EE, and I blame my stint in unemployment on that a$$hole.

15. C'mon people!! Everyone knows that the big
bucks come with an AS/AA!!!

Two year degrees open doors all over and anyone who doesn't realize that just needs to buck up and see the opportunity that is raining down on them (at least I hope that's opportunity, although I don't think opportunity is supposed to be yellow and warm).

This is his idea of making America competitive via education? God, what an asshat.

18. what would Reagan have to tell me
about what I should be doing better to compete in a country where he closed down mental health facilities I could have worked at with my Master's degree I'm working on. oh, it's just a "competetive" work atmosphere, that's all, it's not like there's a need for competent mental health therapists. since we're jobless we can use our time wandering the streets comforting the people that Reagan kicked out onto the streets to fend for themselves, and somehow pay for and remember to take their meds. It's all the fault of my colleges and the bad profs. sure.
