Dean Says He Admired First President Bush
Howard Dean expresses admiration for President Bush (website/newsbio)'s father in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, but says the current president's "obsession with re-election is hurting the country."

52. Best you got?
The problem with making irrational criticisms is that they reflect poorly on your candidate. People appreciate honest, measured criticism ...not uncredible, cheap-shots.

5. Using Bush's father to bash Bush
"I admire George Bush's father," Dean told the magazine during the course of two question-and-answer sessions last month. "There were some things I strongly disagreed with him on, but he tried to be a good president."

He said President Bush is the opposite of his father.

"This president is not interested in being a good president." "He's interested in some complicated psychological situation that he has with his father," the Democratic presidential front-runner said. "He is obsessed with being re-elected, and his obsession with re-election is hurting the country."

Should we burn him at the stake now, or wait to see how the primaries go?

11. The first George Bush handled Iraq the proper way
He went to the UN, formed a coalition, and used on the force necessary to meet the goal of the war. Regardless of what anyone wants to say, Junior could learn a lot from his father in some respects, and this is one of them. George Sr. was a MUCH better president than his son is. I don't think that can be denied. Was he great? No. But considering he was Republican he could have been a lot worse than he actually was. I'd rather have my candidate say something nice about George Sr. than fundraise for and praise Junior.

It seems to me that Wes Clark went public with his voting record even though it was going to cause some difficulty during the primaries. That takes a bit of courage.

45. "They" aren't the only one who do it, friend.
I know it makes things easier to pretend that one's own side is all sweetness and light and the other pure, unmitigated evil, but it doesn't work that way.

Many is the time I have seen mangled quotes and the like thrown at the "not a real Democrat" (i.e., not Howard Dean) candidates here, and when others brought up the issue of context, they were hooted down and accused of trying to evade the issue.

Now, however, that the reigning sacred ox has been gored, context becomes supremely important.

Who said that irony is dead?

Of course, there was more:

"I admire George Bush's father," Dean told the magazine during the course of two question-and-answer sessions last month. "There were some things I strongly disagreed with him on, but he tried to be a good president."

Is that out of context? No. Direct quote.

47. I actually don't have a problem with Father Bush.
He wasn't THAT bad of a president, wasn't great, but not horrible like his son. But of course you ALL left out this quote from Dean:

"There were some things I strongly disagreed with him on, but he tried to be a good president."

Admired and supported are TWO different things. I admired the way Hitler could talk to a crowd; does that make me a Hitler loving Nazi?

I think not. Scant praise for a former president isn't that bad.
