When you register do you get a receipt?????
I keep hearing about all these voter registration forms being torn up but shouldn't they give you some kind of receipt that shows you tried to register? If not then why not????

1. In california you do not get a receipt

But you do get your voter card within a month

In these times the best you can do is to put that form in the mail yoruself... and not rely on anybody else registering you

8. In California, you are supposed to get the bottom torn off
and handed to you. The person taking the form is supposed to sign it, give an address, and tell you to call in a week or two if you haven't heard anything. It's not a receipt, but it does help track your registration.

2. No, but
you will eventually get a card, in most states. The card cannot be used as ID (first time voters now have to show ID in most states) and even if you don't get it, still go to the poll. At the very least you will get to cast a provisional ballot.

Copy everything, ask for a receipt if you hand deliver, and send it in a way that gets you a receipt (e.g, certified mail)

3. In WI
we can register at the polls on election day. Just bring ID and if that doesn't have your current address on it, also bring something that shows your residence (lease, bill, etc).

I think all states should do this! :bounce: Particularly with all of the horrible stories we're hearing in these weeks. It will be TOO LATE for people who think they have registered, and that just isn't right! (I know, you didn't need to be told that)

5. You get an receipt in Mass.
In Massachusetts, your town mails
the receipt to you. If you don't
get a receipt, the instructions
tell you to check with your town hall.
I registered at City Hall and
got a receipt on the spot.

6. No, in Ohio
I didn't get a receipt when I registered, but later in the mail I received a vote registration card with my name and polling place on it.

7. In Texas, it depends on HOW you register.
Edited on Fri Oct-15-04 10:34 PM by crispini
This is also county by county. If my county you register with a mail-in form, then no receipt. There are also hand-carry forms which are filled out by a deputy voter registrar. With those, you get a receipt. I am soooooo glad that I registered most people on the hand-carry form. Then if there was any problem at the office, they can vote anyway because they have the receipt.

edit: and THEN when they process the form they mail out the voter reg card.

The problem I would imagine would come if you just GIVE somebody a mail-in form and trust them to mail them for you.

9. In Kansas you don't get a receipt.
Just the voter registration card in the mail a few weeks later.

You'd think with computer technology there would be a better system in place by now.
