What Dean actually said about Bush and Bush Jr.
Edited on Mon Jan-12-04 08:47 PM by pasadenaboy
"I admire George Bush's father," Dean told the magazine during the course of two question-and-answer sessions last month. "There were some things I strongly disagreed with him on, but he tried to be a good president."

He said President Bush is the opposite of his father.

"This president is not interested in being a good president." "He's interested in some complicated psychological situation that he has with his father," the Democratic presidential front-runner said. "He is obsessed with being re-elected, and his obsession with re-election is hurting the country."

Asked for his thoughts on what motivates Bush, Dean said: "George Bush's philosophy is, 'If you're rich, you deserve it, and if you're poor, you deserve it. That's not my philosophy."

This is what he said. Feel free to agree or disagree, but you should comment on what was actually said.

1. I pretty much agree
with Gov Dean's comments on this topic. Though to be fair in your criticism of the poster most anti-candidate quotes posted here at DU are extracted out of context -- it's not a good thing but it crosses the ranks of campaign supporters.

3. I know
I hope everyone on all sides stops it for all candidates. To see 50 comments on heresay rather than on what was actually said is so depressing and counterproductive.

20. Actually, if you read the comments
very few people seem to have read it. Most seem to have read the five words quoted in the header, but not the link.

Smirk will make quite a study for his prison psychologist someday.

4. Dr. Dean needs to read Kevin Phillips' new book about the Bushes.
In my opinion, the entire family is beyond evil.

Is there a word for "beyond evil" in any language?

5. OH THE HORROR!!!!
It's not like he said that we needed the people in the current administration there or anything, though.

13. OK, here it is in context ... but it still means the same thing
"I admire George Bush's father," Dean told the magazine during the course of two question-and-answer sessions last month. "There were some things I strongly disagreed with him on, but he tried to be a good president."

He admires him. He tried to be a good president.

17. Dean is contrasting Bush's son's presidency with that of the father
and you see that Bush Jr. is actually more radical and extreme than his father was.

21. a lot of Americans admired Bush's father
and that's why this line of reasoning by Dean will resonate with a lot of Americans, and get them to ask, "How come his father was a better President?"

22. Just like a lot of Americans voted for Reagan
and that's why this line of reasoning by Clark will resonate with a lot of Americans.

24. His popularity went down after Iran/Contra/North.
I think one or more scandals are brewing now for Bush. Hopefully O'Neill disclosure will help. From the same link:

Dean said Monday that former Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill's charge of pre-emptive war planning in the White House has validated his stand against the invasion of Iraq.

Dean said his leading rivals for the Democratic presidential nomination supported the congressional resolution authorizing the war without scrutinizing the faulty information coming from the White House. He singled out by name Sens. John Kerry of Massachusetts and John Edwards of North Carolina, Rep. Dick Gephardt (website/newsbio) of Missouri and former Gen. Wesley Clark.

"I would remind Iowans and others that a year ago I stood up against this war and was the only one to do so of the individuals that I have mentioned," Dean told reporters during a six-stop campaign swing before the state's Jan. 19 caucuses.

Clark made a similar claim to being vindicated by O'Neill's revelation. Clark is running as an opponent of the war, but Dean often notes that Clark said two years ago that he would have voted for the resolution and that there was a connection between Iraq and al-Qaida.

25. Bush 1 "tried"...
...in the sense that he may have actually felt more beholden to the "good of the country". He was horribly out of touch, completely aloof from "mainstreet America" and had a domestic policy that was completely shitty...but he was better than his son. That's not saying much though.

that BUSH1 is better than his son. OK I guess he did "try" by your standards.
