One of the things that really gets me going about George W. Bush is his idea of an ownership society. It sounds great, but it just can't happen. The cornerstone of his plan is having people to go to college. This fails on several accounts:
1. Families with young children have trouble balancing jobs and their kids. That's in a family with two parents. It would be next to impossible for a single mother to attend college while raising children. Is George W. Bush going to provide child care? The only way this would work is if the minimum wage was raised and the extra income could pay for a baby-sitter. We know where George W. Bush stands on the minimum wage and child care.
2. If everyone attended college, that would only raise the qualifications for job training. It's the same reason why people go to graduate school. Just getting an undergraduate degree isn't enough these days for many white collar or 'owner' jobs. In the end, the diploma would be the same as what a high school degree is right now. The first people to go through Bush's college assistance program would benefit, but the benefits would wear off soon. And in the words of George W. Bush, "I don't know how he is going to pay for all of this". I also don't know why he didn't do this during the last four years.
3. The most important aspect though is that an ownership society is impossible in the 21st century without strict corporate regulation and we know where W stands on that one. Wal-Mart goes into a small town and wipes out all the owners of small stores. You want an ownership society? Ban Wal-Mart! Corporations are buying out America. It seems like every day we have a new merger between billion dollar companies who have purchased million dollar companies along the way. Those huge corporations have either bought up the little guys or run them out of business.
George W. Bush is against anything that would actually help America have an ownership society and it's past time to call him on it. Some people have to be thinking, "George Bush wants an ownership society? I could be an owner under George Bush." When in reality, the only ownership society that George W. Bush wants is a society owned by corporations.
