"Dred Scott" is code for "Pro-Life": From The Nation
The "Dred Scott" reference Dubya made in the 2nd debate was code. In effect, Bush was transmitting to the anti-abortion freaks that if he were elected again, he'd work to make sure Roe was overturned.

Here's the link at The Nation magazine:

3. Yeah
I posted it twice this morning. But I thought I'd post it a few more times in the 24-hrs since I read it, to catch other DUs who just cruise the first page of postings.

4. The article says it is code for "ANTI-CHOICE".

Where do you get "pro-life"?

There is nothing in the article that suggests Dred Scott is code connected to any "pro-life" organizations such as an anti-war or anti-death penalty group.

5. It's all about the 14th amendment---
I've explained this before, and will do it again....

Dred Scott and the Missouri Compromise (where slaves were counted as 3/5ths) for purposes of representation in Congress, were overruled/overturned by the 14th amendment which made former slaves 'persons' under the law.

Wingers have been trying to expand the definition of 'personhood' to include the fetus for a long time now. Read the dissents of Roe, Wesbter, and Casey. Problem is, there is very little case law that backs the propostion that the fetus is a 'person'.

Thus, you now have wingers working backward--not fighting abortion from conception onwards, but from birth backwards...chipping away at Roe with partial birth abortion bans and criminal statutes that include penalties for harming a fetus....You see, if you can get enough precedent on the books, you might get a judge, then an appeals court, who might define a late-term fetus as a 'person'.

Then, you just work backwards.....

Not a bad legal theory, btw..sneaky, and possibly the only way to overturn Roe.
