Looks the the residents of southern Oregon (supposedly GOP-friendly country) are gonna be glad that ChimpSmirk is giving up on the state and won't be disturbing them anymore.

5. The last couple of paragraphs;
the quote from the Bush*Borg, I mean, kind of say it all:

<<Sixteen year old Zack Burgdorf, dressed in military fatigues, shouted, “If you’re gay — go back to Ashland. America’s not made for queers.”

“Especially not Jacksonville,” chimed Maddox.>>

I presume Zack Burdgorf is on the Delayed Entry Program to go over to Iraq and fight for his beliefs and Preznit Give Me Turkee? His parents can sign for him to go, once he graduates, even if he's not 18 yet.

Yeah, I suspected not. Wearin' those fatigues, though, wasn't he?

Yep.

11. They're only depressing if you don't hear this sh*t out of people
every day. But I live in a swing state, and this kind of attitude is the reason swing states and red states are what they are. Zach also probably goes to church every Sunday with his parents. He probably kisses his mother with that mouth. I hear that kind of sh*t out of people on the street more often than I'd like.

35. No question that's true.
The more insecure and helpless people feel, the more they seem to need to feel superior to others who are different. It seems to somehow make them feel safer, though I've never understood the mechanism.

12. Sorry, but...
Maybe this person should have left their 5-year old at home. Why bring a small child to a night time protest?????

I don't condone the actions of the police... actually, I don't know the whole story so I won't really comment on the whole thing.

Keep the kids out of the protests. That goes for BOTH sides!!! Children are not political tools!!!

OK, hit me!!! :)

13. why bring a child to a protest?
because we have come to presume the right to PEACEFUL protest...not to be strong-armed by goons...

15. A peaceful protest, yes...
but, if ordered by the police to move, you do so or risk consequences.

I am not saying that is right, but who in their right mind is going to not simply comply if they are holding a child in their arms?

Otherwise, this seems to me to be a ploy to get attention. NO ONE on either side should be doing this.

you (and I, and we), don't know the whole story....but we do know that no president in recent history (dating back to Nixon) has used the police apparatus to fend off and intimidate free speech protest the way Chimp has....that is a fact.

Edited on Sun Oct-17-04 02:02 AM by Mountainman
These things are not planned nor does one intentionally try to get attention in such situations. I hear your kind of BS so often when you should be about defending you fellow countryman's legal right to lawful assembly.

You are comfortable living in a fascist state so long as your side is in power but remember don't ask "for whom does the bell toll, it tolls for you also!"

33. You've obviously never been to a protest. Things aren't that simple.
Typically, one group of cops will tell you one thing; another group of cops will tell you the opposite.

The article alluded to that. First they were told to go into the street. Then other cops said they'd be arrested for being in the street.

16. Well, no...
This was not 'their' protest. There was a clear reason for the police to be there. You have opposing groups on each side of a street. All it takes is one nut on either side (or both) to start a BIG problem.

The police SHOULD be there to keep the peace. If, at any point, they believe that things are getting out of hand, they SHOULD attempt to disperse both groups or at least maintain some control of the situation if possible.

Now, dispersing one group and not the other? I don't agree with that. But, then again, I was not there to see what really happened.

And as for "the cops came in and beat the kid", the woman herself said she was pushed after being told by the officer to move. She said nothing about her child being touched at all.

Don't try to incite people through flat out lies. Then you are just as bad as the people you criticize.

But then, apparently bringing one's child to a peaceful protest is considered incitement these days.

34. Mommy and daddy couldn't afford a babysitter.
Ever notice how many parents bring the kids to stores so the parents can get what they want and slap the kid silly every time the kid reminds those in the store he's a kid?!

You are right. Kids should stay out of political events. I don't care which side uses them; but both will anyway.

18. What a wonderful impact ...
our "uniter" is having on us all, not to mention the World.

I hold * responsible for the effect, more than I do his supporters. He sets the tone and it goes from the top-down. He would rather put people in harm's way than to tolerate his detractors.

I often wonder if the "staged" rallies are to make him look good in videos and photos as agitprop, or is even more about protecting his fragile, frightened ego from being bruised? It's split to me.

Gosh, if he has any idea about how to use the Internets, Googling himself could be totally devastating. Who needs public opinion polls when all you have to do is look at the scores and scores of links that come up in relation to your own name? Shudder.

28. You must have missed this part.
Edited on Sun Oct-17-04 10:33 AM by wumburgundom
"Oregon State Police spokesman Kurt Barttel said the crowd was asked to move to a safer area where they could congregate, to preserve the fluidity of the president’s motorcade.

“Most of the individuals cooperated, a small group of about five refused to cooperate. They were given several warnings, attempts were made to push them and they ended up grabbing back at the officers so pepper was used,” Barttel said."

If she was that concerned for her child's safety, perhaps she should have moved when asked. Considering that she didn't, she placed her child in a potentially dangerous situation. It would probably have been an even BETTER decision NOT to bring the child to a protest to begin with. Maybe we should recommend her to Good Housekeeping for "Mother of the Year".
