The Dems just lost an important case in Florida
It is not even more important that Democrats get voters to the polls during the early voting period. In addition, if the Dems are smart, they'll have 800 lines that people can call in order to find out the location of their polling places. It wouldn't surprise if the GOP has moved some polling places around in the hopes that people will end up casting provisional ballots at the wrong polling place.

Fla. Court Rules on Provisional Ballots
The Associated Press
Monday, October 18, 2004; 12:50 PM

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - People who cast a provisional ballot at the wrong precinct aren't entitled to have their votes counted, the state Supreme Court unanimously ruled Monday, rejecting an argument by labor unions that the rule wrongly disenfranchises voters.

The court said that the law clearly states that provisional ballots must be counted only if the person was entitled to vote "at the precinct," and that the constitution gives the Legislature the authority to dictate voting rules.

1. Uh huh. Are we providing travel service to correct precincts?
Are we alerting people before they enter the polls not to vote if the precinct is incorrect?

We know their tricks. ARE WE READY???

3. The problem is, the official poll workers won't be able to direct
you to the right precint. Nor will the be able to alert you to the fact that the reason why you aren't on their rolls is because you have shown up at the wrong precinct.

I'm afraid that many people, after standing in line for a long time only to be told that they aren't listed, will simply fill out a provision ballot (which probably won't be counted) and won't bother to make the effort to determine whether or not they should have voted at a different precinct.

2. Precinct maps. How easy are they to find?
Edited on Mon Oct-18-04 12:22 PM by NewYorkerfromMass
Do they even exist?

Absolutely this is critical. The 800 number is a good idea but you can't expect people to know if their precinct has changed. We need to be proactive in heading off problems.
Dem workers need to get a hold of maps and figure out who's affected by any changes.

6. Any polling place that has changed needs notification
there need to be official notices mailed to each voter in these distrcits.
I know darn well they are doing it in primarily Democratic areas.
They tried it in Philly and got shot down.
The databse access idea is a good one too.

5. There ought to be a computer program to tell people this
The Department of Elections ought to have a computer program that let's you enter a street address and then gives you the location of the polling place. Unfortunately, they probably don't. Ease of voting simply isn't very high up on their list of priorities.

7. Provisional ballots are what will save us
but only IF they are counted. People need to understand how important this is.
