CNN must have gotten a big kick in the chops over the Gallup poll results yesterday. Even James Carville lashed out on Crossfire about it, exhorting "Mr. Gallup" (his words) to "stop screwing with that poll". He then went on to say to "Mr. Gallup", "I'm your Daddy! Now stop messin' with those numbers".
Later, on Lou Dobbs, Lou asked Ron Brownstein about the Gallup poll numbers showing a 12-point lead for Bush. Mr. Brownstein, to his credit, said that it was "the most volatile poll over the last several years and probably did not reflect the situation on the ground". Lou asked him if he was questioning the veracity of their (CNN's) poll numbers. Ron simply repeated about it being the most volatile poll over the last several years. Lou just smiled and went on.
I have watched closely this a.m. and at first Carol Costello gave a major nationwide poll result (sorry didn't catch which one) that showed the race at 46% to 46%... dead heat. She did NOT mention Gallup. She later had Frank Newport on (from Gallup) who was discussing the numbers in various states until CNN lost the feed on him. He never did mention the overall "horse race" numbers.
Now, Hemmer and O'Brien are on and they finally mentioned poll numbers which reflected an "average of national polls" which had Bush 50% and Kerry 45%, but still no mention of Gallup. You can be sure they included the Gallup numbers in the average (why else Bush at 50% still?), but, nonetheless, no mention of Gallup specifically.
Looks like they've had their little hineys spanked and are behaving a little better today. Hah! :spank:
