Kerry is winning among video-game fans!
http://www.gamefaqs.com/

Normally, this site has the nerdiest poll questions imaginable. Like "Which type of mithril armor is the best for defending against orcs in Dungeons & Dragons?" But apparently most nerds are pretty liberal. Cool.

Bush: 38%
Kerry: 49%
Too close to call:19%

1. They might ask which type of mithril armor is the best...
for defending against rabid chimpanzees posing as presidents. :P

Well, I figured nerds are liberal on the average. We read more, after all, and by now, most people who're still far right are only sticking their heads in the sand.

9. I don't know about nerds, but geeks typically aren't liberals.
Geeks (a subset of nerds, specifically computer-oriented nerds) tend to be depressingly right-wing.

Part of the reason is that they tend to be from sheltered, middle-class backgrounds. They haven't seen poverty and hardship up close and so don't take them seriously as social problems. They're intelligent, but they're only well-informed in the areas of math and the hard sciences. They tend not to pay much attention to history. Thus they have a tendency to be against government regulation because they don't understand why those regulations were put into place to begin with. A typical example is the libertarian geek who says that the FDA should be abolished because the free market will keep our food and medicines pure -- completely unaware that the FDA was established precisely because the free market failed to keep the food supply pure prior to its inception. They tend to believe that everyone is as smart and well-informed as they are and thus see much of the apparatus of government as unnecessary.

Of course, this is just a description of a general tendency and not a hard and fast rule. You could find individual geeks all over the political spectrum -- for instance, I'm a geek and I'm very liberal.

2. And you're visiting the "nerd" site because....?
Hey, I love video games and I've been there before, but no need to bash them. Playing D&D is far better that sitting on your ass watching Jerry Springer.

5. I'm not bashing them, but there are levels of video game players...
I'm one of the more casual video game players who stays the hell away from LAN parties and online-RPGs and plays only single-player games. They can be just as addictive, but they don't have the same stigma attached to them as games like Everquest and D&D. But I'm obviously a big enough dork to check that site for stuff about Grand Theft Auto or Half-Life 2...
