If so, how long will it take? Could we see them starting as soon as election returns start looking favorable for a Kerry win? Will they never turn that way at all? Lemme know what you think, and more importantly WHY.

1. NO, dissent will become patriotic again if Kerry wins.
The media will pick up on any bogus scandal like Clinton-and-Whitewater, and treat it like the biggest scandal ever.

13. They will go after Kerry but it will be different
Kerry has money to hire lawyers of quality or investigators if necessary, remember Clinton had nothing, he was paid very little as Governor and he never played the money game like the Repugs. Kerry never played that game either. If they had something on Kerry it would have surfaced already. With these people it has to be sex or money scams to make any impact. I believe Kerry will be ready for these creeps, he knows what he will face. The power of the presidency is still huge, he will have the advantage.

5. CNN used to be owned by Ted Turner...
That explains to a degree why Clinton had decent coverage until the Monica days...

No such luck now.

Kerry needs to take them all down a notch or two, and he's the man to do it.

6. No
The mainsream media will only fall in line if we hold them accountable. Use a big stick and let them know that we will smack them down every time they lie and misslead. Control of the Senate would be helpfull.

7. IMHO...
11 seconds.

Precisely enough time for a person to fully empty their bowels into their pants and mentally view an image of Howard Dean taking control of the FCC.

10. No. And here's why.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn/A42212-2004Aug5?language=printer

QUESTION: Senator, the Federal Communications Commission last year voted to allow media companies to further consolidate, allowing a single entity to gain greater control of television stations and newspapers in any given market.

QUESTION: The ruling, however, has been halted by a federal appeals court, which questioned the FCC's plan.

Critics complain that consolidation is concentrating too much power in one place, limiting diverse views and eliminating job opportunities. Media companies, however, argue that they need to operate in a free market with less regulations to compete and grow.

How do you propose to deal with this ongoing push for media consolidation?

KERRY: I'm against the ongoing push for media consolidation. I think it's contrary to...

(APPLAUSE)

It's contrary to the stronger interests of the country.

I understand the world has changed with cable and Internet and the numbers of outlets that we have. But notwithstanding that, the concentration of power still remains, I think, a very significant issue.

I was in favor of the rollback. I voted against the expansion.

I've sat on that committee now for years; I'm familiar with all the issues. And as president, as I said, I will appoint people to the FCC, and I will pursue a policy that tries to have as diverse and broad an ownership as possible.

It is critical to who we are as a free people. It's critical to our democracy.

I mean, look, I don't know how many of you have seen "Outfoxed" or some of the other things that are going around. You can make your own judgments about it. I'm not going to stand here and give you a long critique here.

But I will say this, and I think most of you know it: that a lot of what is decided with respect to news and coverage -- look at the convention of the last week. I thought Barack Obama gave a brilliant speech.

(APPLAUSE)

America missed it. America missed it, with the exception of cable outlets. Because broadcast decided to cover these certain hours, I had something like 30 million people watch, versus 7 million on a certain night.

I thought it was a very important evening, very important evening, when Ron Reagan talked about stem-cell research.

(APPLAUSE)

My wife gave, I thought, a superb speech. These were moments that I think America ought to share.

If we're going to be a strong democracy, and if it's all driven by money, we're in trouble. I'm going to make sure we have diversity.

(APPLAUSE)

14. Hell No
Look at the way the media treated Clinton with the bogus Whitewater charges. When he was exonerated, they never really admitted it beyond a one-paragraph blurb on page B15. . . They also hounded him (Clinton) beyond belief with their incessant nagging about a blow job.

Look at the difference with Bush. He's lied to us and has gotten 1100 of our soldiers killed; he's raped the environment; he's stolen part of our constitutional rights. . . This is only PART of what he's done, and he's gotten a complete free ride from the stenograhers who call themselves journalists.

There's no reason to think that the media, etc. will treat Kerry any differently than they treated Clinton; there IS a double standard, and they have no shame.

15. Fox will be the worst!
They'll go on an immediate witch-hunt. No more fawning. The attack dogs will come out.

Remember, though, it's been this way since Ronald Reagan. Free ride and fawning praise for the Republicans--tough questions and cheap shots for the Democrats.

President Kerry needs to re-empower the FCC, bust up some media cartels (need a strong Atty. Gen. for that), and hold the media accountable. Won't make him popular, but all Americans will enjoy the benefits for generations to come.

Provided, of course, that Chimpy and the righteous army don't steal the election.

Helen Thomas BACK to her chair in the front of the room...then the begging will begin. Advantage - Kerry
