My story from Colorado
I ran across this story online:

Rocky Mountain News "A Lakewood Republican stealing campaign signs late one night got nabbed when he ran across a low- hanging driveway chain, fell face first onto a pilfered sign and the concrete and knocked himself unconscious."

The article prompted me to post the following, which I originally sent to bartcop but i guess he didn't see it.

I haven't lived in Denver for decades, but my dad still does. And weekend before last we kids went there from California to bury our mother, whose relatives are mostly there. Denver is one of the most beautiful cities in North America.

Anyway, visiting relatives you haven't seen in a while you do a lot of driving. All up and down Monaco, Colorado Blvd, then in West Denver we started to realize that we had seen dozens, then hundreds of Kerry/Edwards signs in front lawns. Everywhere. At first you think "oh there's a maverick" but then there's others and then many more.

And not one goddam Bush/Cheney sign anywhere. We started looking. Not one!

What to make of this? Colorado's electoral votes have gone Republican in the last 9 elections. Of course all my mother's and father's relatives would RABIDLY vote Democratic this election but that's hardly the majority there (although it seems like it). Where are the Republicans? My cousin's wife -- a party activist -- said she thinks they're all hiding or something.

So on the day after the service my dad and I went driving around the more affluent neighborhoods looking. We found a few on the outskirts of the Cherry Hills district. One was in front of a house under construction.

Could it be Colorado will go Kerry/Edwards this year? Anyone from Colorado shed some more light on this?

P.S. I hear that state proposition to go proportional on Electoral votes is going down 2-1. So its all 9 going one way or the other.

1. You know Steele Street between Florida and Evans?
near where the John Paul Center for Evangelism? That side of the street is full of */Cheney and Coors, and one corner has Kerry sign.

I swung by there yesterday and began my ritual cursing of the Bushbots.

2. We're still leaning red
Don't forget, you were in Diana DeGette territory, one of the few Democratic strongholds in the state - outside of Boulder. We are still expected to go for *, but hopefully Salazar can squeak by the beer man for the Senate. Most of the state still rural and independent which makes them think they should vote Republican. Too bad more couldn't have been made of the environment.

3. Cilinton won CO's EVs in 1992
The last Dem to win CO was I believe LBJ in '64.

I just returned from Southern Colorado, and I was also surprised by the number of Kerry signs and bumperstickers.

I think it could be an upset this year, and with Salazar on the ballot more Latinos will go vote.

I agree.

Colorado has to be one of the most beautiful places in all the world.

4. Colorado seems to be a rather unique state
Despite voting reliably Republican in several elecctions we've been known to elect a fair number of democratic governers, and despite going for Bush last election we briefly had a democratic state legislature. In addition I was reading a summary of "The great divide" about the division between "retro and metro" states, and to my surprise Colorado ws listed as a "metro" state despite voting semi consistently conservative. I think the reality is that Colorado is a fairly moderate state, but its been taken in by Bush's "compassionate conservative" message.

5. It's anyone's guess
I live in Denver and I've given up trying to make a call. Every poll seems to have a different story, and our media puts the "whore" in horrible.

The problem with Colorado is that we have more than our share of right wing nutjobs due to the influence of Colorado Springs, which is like a Branson Missouri for the tinfoil hat crowd. Basically, Republicans have an edge in registration here, though unaffiliateds run a close second. We've had a ton of new registrations, so as with everywhere else, the key will be getting people to the polls.

7. Our demographics are changing with the influx of new residents . . .
We'll go blue eventually, I'm sure of it. We have strong pockets of blue already -- Boulder, Ft Collins (at least according to my sister) & parts of Denver.

I've got my hopes that Colorado will go Kerry this year. It could happen. Let's make it so!

8. Colorado will...
go Kerry this year...salzar will win...the trick is that we need to get the Dems out to vote...the state dems say we need to get 71% of the registered dems out to the poles and 74% of them need to choose Kerry....then the independents will break 3 to 2 for Kerry and put us over the top

the pubs here are more ardent about voting so we need to make sure the GOTV efforts work and we get a fair counting....last I heard was that the SoS said that provisional ballots would only count for presidential election and the others on the ballot would not be counted...sad but that may have or will change...

10. Don't know if Colorado will go blue
But it surely isn't the dependable red state that the Bush people were was counting on it to be at the beginning of the campaign. Every Bush ad that runs in Colorado isn't running in Ohio, Pennsylvania or Florida.

Okay, DUers: Your efforts anywhere can have an effect, even in states you think aren't going to go for Kerry.

Get out the vote.

Kerry in a landslide.

11. Denver is a Kerry Edwards town, Boulder is Kerry, Aspen/Telluride KE
stay out of Jefferson County, Eagle county (Vail is for Pukkkes!) and a lot of other places if you don't want to run in to some garden variety freeper trash as well as rich Bushie aholes. It's tough "out there" in the open range...

Colorado is a big maybe, but Denver is Kerry Town!
