My experience at a major Delray Beach polling place:
Going to be out of town for the 2nd, so I got an absentee ballot. Then thought better of it, decided to try early voting, and was told I just had to turn it in at the polling place. Arrived at 4 p.m. last Wednesday (third day of early voting in Florida), because Theresa LaPore was quoted saying lines were less than 30 minutes. When I arrived, I was told it would be 2 to 3 hours, and that it had been longer earlier in the day.... I was encouraged that so many people were there -- especially since there were so many Kerry stickers in the parking lot -- but not so thrilled that it was taking so long. I wonder if people stuck it out, and will keep sticking it out, and it makes me wonder about Election Day.
Since I had to get back to work and couldn't wait that long, I ran out to get pencils -- in this state, I don't trust anything, even the instructions saying you can use No. 2 pencil or "appropriate marking device." Then I filled out absentee ballot in the back.
The woman taking the absentees -- who was about 3 days from 100 and didn't seem to know anything about anything -- had already left. So I looked for someone to give it to. A security guard said he would take it. I wouldn't let him. I walked into the office itself, and a poll worker offered to just take it. I told him I wanted to see it dropped in the box, and then I wanted him to pick up the box so I could make sure it wasn't the trash. Maybe I'm paranoid.
All I know is that two well-dressed men applauded. I'm guessing they were Democratic lawyers. And I guess they had their own doubts.
All that said, I still don't think my vote will count.
And everyone should be careful: the wording on Amendment No. 1 is intentionally tricky, I think. It's about parental notification for abortion. Make sure to vote no, even though there's some double-speak in it, that makes you think that by voting "Yes," you're protecting the girl.
