U.S. confidence takes another hit
Consumer index falls for third consecutive month amid job worries

Continuing job worries drove consumer confidence lower in October for the third consecutive month, a New York-based private research group said Tuesday. The decline was steeper than expected.

The Consumer Confidence Index dropped 3.9 points to 92.8, down from a revised 96.7 in September, according to The Conference Board. Analysts had expected a reading of 94.

Does anyone see the relation between the economic numbers and the fact that all the talking heads and slanted polls are predicting a Bush win in Nov? I just keep asking mysely every day "Why is this race so close???" Can't people see what is going to happen if we re-select this moran?

1. What has consumer spending done?
It's a much more meaningful measure. Instead of measuring "what people SAY" as Consumer Confidence does, the consumer spending numbers measure "what people DO" and there has been very little correlation between the two numbers since 1998.

6. Consumer confidence is "more or less" viewed
as meaningless by technical analysts on Wall Street and most economists, because it has been so uncorrelated with consumer spending over the last 6 years.

You just can't use it to predict anything.

3. Heh, I watched part of the "Nightly Business Report" on PBS tonight...
They had some George H. Bush-era idiot on there saying that terrorism was the main reason why nobody was hiring and that we need to elect the strongest and most consistent leader against terrorism so that we can create more jobs. She also said that anybody comparing Bush* to Hoover doesn't know what they're talking about. :eyes:
