15. yes, because he's desperate for every vote
and wants to bring greedy gay men back into his camp.

I have a feeling the polling numbers have been telling the Bush junta something quite different from what they're telling us rubes.

... his "base' is furious with that comment .. don't think he meant to say that - he was pandering to the swing .. but went too far for his base

8. I think he knows fundies aren't enough...
...its clearly a desperate move on the chimps part but also a very risky one.He is at best trading one group of votes for another.Maybe he hopes he'll geta bit more but I don't think its enough.

10. He Doesn't Know

I'm tempted to nominate a different option. He's so deep in his bubble doesn't know what a "civil union" is.

12. Who cares? This could win it for us!
If Kerry gets on this one, this can win it for us!

"I am glad the pResident has finally arrived at a reasonable position with regard to gay civilian unions."

or

"I am glad the pResident finally agrees with me regarding gay and lesbian issues."

That will kill his support among idol worshippers and other religious wackos.

13. I do hope that the voters realize...
... that this is a transparent ploy to alter the vote at the last minute, in the same way that the "compassionate" conservative routine was intended to do.

People who know this man has lied repeatedly during campaigns won't be swayed. The idiots who think he's an "honest, decent man" will suck this up like kool-aid in Guyana....

What it will do to his religious right base is anyone's guess. My guess is that they all know there's a "wink, wink" in this strategy.

17. I think he really believes it.
That would make it a slip of the tongue, of course.

Maybe he knows he is going to lose and is looking to his "legacy?"

21. Not Gays-Suburban Moderate Swing Voters....
Edited on Tue Oct-26-04 08:51 PM by DemocratSinceBirth
That's why Republicans make overtures to blacks...

Not because they think they can get many black votes but because they think they can appeal to swing voters who don't like to think of themselves as bigots...
