Republican Conversion Thread. Post your tales here:

I realized that often posters have posted individual stories about family, friends, and co-workers, who will NOT vote for Bush, even though they are Republicans. Perhaps we can have one thread for those stories, so we can get all that warm glow in one spot, and keep the momentum going.

My tales: My brother in law, a lifelong Republican, conservative Catholic, with conservative parents. Was voting for Bush up until last week.. My sister (a liberal like my whole family) convinced him to watch F9/11 with her. My Mom tells me he is PISSED, and will probably vote for Kerry, or not vote at all.

My husband's co-worker shared this today. He is a lifelong republican, a conservative. He cannot 'bring himself to vote for Bush' He did last time, and saw what a failure he is. He is voting for Kerry!

I have met several recovering Republicans through my volunteer work for a State candidate. AND.. I have seen many cars with ALL republican bumper stickers, the required American flag, and JOHN KERRY right in the center of the republicans.

both co-workers and both what I would call 'Christian conservatives' I've slowly worked on them. and finally today they both said that they are 100% against B* and that they are working on their family members too.

It all started with me giving them my pirated copies of F911 and going from there. Tons of stuff about Christian things that I found here at DU and a whole lot of good old fashioned arguing.

While in the Air Force, I supported Republican candidates for President :(

I really believed there was a shining city on a hill, but later learned that only rich and powerful people were allowed to live there.

I really fell for the 1000 points of light, but came to realize they were George HW's rich buddies.

I've always cared for those less fortunate than myself, yet fell for all that compassionate conservative crap in the 80s.

But they will never, ever, fool me again.

All voted for * in 2000. This year, 3 are voting *, 1 not voting, and 9 are voting for Kerry. Keep in mind that this is SD, sure to go *, but those popular votes are good to see! All 9 changed their minds about * after engaging in discussion on the war and the rising threat of theocracy.

My dad's entire family (except for my dad) have always been very Republican. His brother is a Vietnam vet, refuses to buy "Jap Crap" cars, has always been very conservative. Anyway, my dad told me that his brother came down for a visit, and dad was just blown away. He's become one of the most vehemently anti-Bush people dad's ever met. Apparently, he's been out of work for a while, so he's been spending lots of time online, reading about things. He first heard about Bush's cutting back of VA funds, started reading up on it, and that led to reading up on all the other things Bush has done, and now he's in all-out attack mode. He's been telling everyone he knows about how bad Bush has been for the country, and he's out to make sure he loses the election. Very heartwarming, in a way, because dad's been kind of estranged from his whole family over politics, and now he and his brother are a lot closer than they've been in years.

a 57-year-old friend in Florida to register and vote for the first time for Kerry, though all of her family are fundies.

And my mother-in-law—one of those women who would vote Republican just because her late husband would have wanted her to (these types KILL me)—is now voting for Kerry in Wisconsin.

went from "leaning Bush" to "die-hard Kerry" under my tutilage. :)

My in-laws live in Whitebread, OH, population 5,000 or so. They have $$$. They drive a pickup truck. They put gravy on everything. He's a deacon in thier church, she plants the flowerbed outside and helps to decorate the interior for holidays. They watch Faux news and the 700 club. I thought they were a lost cause but leftydad kept working on them.

Today they gave us the good news, they're voting K/E.

The two things that got them, in case anybody else needs a few lines of attack: * has not treated veterans well. The economy is crap and thier retirement savings are suffering for it.

This is an ex-Navy officer, very well-off and very smart guy. When I met him he was a Republican, but seemed to be an open-minded sort, based on some brief political discussions. He was admittedly a one-issue Republican (taxes).

When the war was about to start, I talked to him a lot about how it was b.s. Being a smart guy, he started doing his own reading and evaluating, and he quickly came to the conclusion that the whole invasion was a farce. I pointed him to PNAC, and that was it for him.

He's now a registered Democrat, donated a bunch of money to Dems during the primaries and now to Kerry. I think he got his wife to re-register, too. He also is very influential among his friends and lots of younger people who look up to him, and he talks to people all the time about the idiocy and ineptitude of the Bush administration.

He's one of my favorite Democrats. :)
