The Republican proposal has 54 co-sponsors in the House, and it scares the sh*t out of people--especially those living on social security--and those working in low-wage jobs.
I've already talked to three people tonight who are reconsidering voting for Bush after hearing about this and being reminded that the Repubs control both the House and the Senate and that Bush, if re-elected (?--for purposes of persuasion, I'm pretending he was elected--don't want to fight that fight now) would be likely to sign such a law.
if you're talking to people making enough to like the idea, remind them that without a corresponding increase in the minimum wage, it might mean that the families of the working poor might be forced to the street, unable to pay rent, utitlities, buy gas and feed and clothe their chldren.
And remind people that if they aren't filing income taxes, they're also not getting deductions for interest on their mortgage, for medical expenses, health insurance, charitable contributions, home offices, etc.
It's a potent tool. Let's use it to full advantage between now and election day!
