White Democrats, independents help Bush to lead in La. polls
<A University of New Orleans poll released Tuesday gave Bush 48 percent to Kerry's 40 percent among registered voters. When the UNO figures are weighted to include only "likely voters," Bush enjoys an even greater lead of 50 percent to Kerry's 38 percent. In both cases, the UNO poll showed Ralph Nader gets 2 percent, with 8 percent undecided.

Both polls suggest wide differences between black and white voters: In the SLU poll, 77 percent of whites support Bush, 67 percent of blacks support Kerry; In the UNO poll 66 percent of the white vote goes to Bush; 71 percent of the black vote backs Kerry.

Race is a factor in support for the war. In the SLU poll, almost 70 percent of whites surveyed approved, almost 16 percent of blacks disapproved.

Overall, 46 percent of the voters surveyed by UNO believe the national economy has gotten worse in the last year, with 27 percent saying it has stayed the same, 26 percent saying it is better.

Among blacks, 72 percent say the economy grew worse over the year, 19 percent said it stayed the same and 8 percent said it got better.

Black voters continue to form the base of support for Kerry, who draws support from 71 percent of those surveyed compared to 6 percent for Bush. "The actual undoubtedly be higher" for Kerry, the poll analysis states.>

2. Am I the only one who thinks this is somewhat positive?
Bush is only pulling 48-50 percent in Louisiana with lots of undecideds? If we get the African American vote out strong it will be close.

3. I hate that Democrats
can never stick with the party. Republicans can kick their people while their down and they will still vote for them. I've never understood this.

5. I think the LA Times had an insightful report on this issue recently
The LA Times shows Bush doing well among lower and middle income whites, whereas Kerry leads among whites earning more than $100,000 a year despite his promise to roll back the Bush tax cuts for people making more than $200,000 a year. As president, Bush has enacted big tax cuts for the rich but the rich are voting for Kerry. Lower income whites like Bush's proposal to ban gay marriage but only a quarter believe his policies have been good for the economy. In contrast, affluent whites who have benefitted the most from the Bush tax cuts believe Bush's policies have hurt the economy. The real divide seems to be between deeply religious lower income, lower education, voters living in small towns and rural areas who have conservative values on abortion and gay marriage versus higher income, higher education, secular, urban voters who have progressive views on cultural issues.

7. bush also wants them to think they aren't doing well financially because
some minority or female wrongly took away some well paying job because of affirmative action.

6. They're not counting the College and University votes............
either. My daughter is a student at Tulane and she says that students are overwhelmingly for Kerry. There's a hell of a lot of Colleges and Universities in LA, if they break 75% for Kerry, it could be very interesting.
