The statewide poll released Wednesday shows 49 percent of likely voters surveyed favor Kerry, while 42 percent support Bush. Ralph Nader received support from 2 percent of those surveyed, according to a report in Thursday's edition of the St. Cloud Times.
The random telephone survey of 673 likely voters was conducted between Oct. 17 and Oct. 26, and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.7 percentage points. Kerry received his strongest support from women -- 56 percent of women surveyed picked him, while 36 percent supported Bush. Half of the men supported Bush, while 44 percent of the men supported Kerry.
Kerry also did well with young voters, receiving support from 78 percent of voters age 18 to 24, compared with 11 percent for Bush. Voters age 55 and older tended to favor Kerry, while those between 25 and 55 favored Bush, the poll showed. Forty-one percent of those surveyed said they identify themselves as Democrat, while 32 percent said they are Republican. Another 12 percent claim to be independent, and 2 percent identify with the Green Party.
