I predicted it! O'neill deleted from Clark quote - Orwellian drudge -
Early on in the O'Neill story I predicted the following at http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=132&topic_id=93715 :

Quote from Wesley Clark in Pulaski County Speech, May 2001:

"As you look around the world, there's a lot of work to be done. And rm very glad we have got the great team in office, men like Colin Powell. Don Rumsfeld. Dick Cheney. Condoleezza Rice. Paul O'Neill, people I know very well. our president George W. Bush. We need him there. . ."

My prediction: "I make the bold prediction that this quote will either lapse into disuse or the part about O'Neill will be ignored as extraneous context, just like the rest of the speech has been. It will probably be a combination of the two."

And now what do we have, but this:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=132&topic_id=119885

The quote is "revised" by Drudge, with the name Paul O'Neill mysteriously redacted, and then posted on the Democratic Underground.

The "revised" quote:

"During extended remarks delivered at the Pulaski County GOP Lincoln Day Dinner in Little Rock, Arkansas on May 11, 2001, General Clark declared: "And I'm very glad we've got the great team in office, men like Colin Powell, Don Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney, Condoleezza Rice... people I know very well - our president George W. Bush. We need them there."

A video of Clark making the comments has surfaced, DRUDGE can reveal."

George Orwell has arrived, and his name is Matt Drudge. HIT THIS HARD PEOPLE. This is OUTRAGEOUS!

1. Matt, you da man!
How on Earth did you track that one down!

Outstanding.

Plus: what an interesting light this sheds on sources used around here... And for what purpose. Tsk tsk.

2. Because I was EXPECTING IT
It was SO OBVIOUS. SO PREDICTABLE. You have to realize that these people will seize on anything, ignore any context, and stop at nothing. We need to get this out to the press and the campaign to go along with his other use of elipses.

4. Yep,
Exactly what I was thinking of. This is not a single instance of outright intellectual dishonesty and smearing, this is a verified pattern.

5. Do you have a snapshot of the original quote on Drudge?
I'm trying to find one. He might have edited him out originally because he objected to tax cuts.

7. Here

Yes, on closer inspection it looks like you are right. The "article" is from September 25.

9. Matt, you can email Mike Moore. I am sure he would find it interesting.
I used to email Mike Moore to endorse Clark (seriously) and look
what happened ;-)

10. The other thing you should do is get it on the Clark community blog and...
email the campaign.

8. That is one of the creepiest things I've seen lately...can we say:
Thought Police!?!

What has our Country come to.

I feel like we live in an Orwellian nightmare more and more
everyday. It's weird because folks just go on with their lives.

Now I can see how societies decend into the hell that was
Nazi Germany and Stalinist Soviet Union. As long as it's the
other guy getting shot, people don't make a stink.

12. Drudge is this generations Roy Cohn
and just as harmful. A little man given way too much power and influence by the laziness of the supposed reporters and journalists who feed at the trough of his website.

Just my opinion, of course. I'm sure Rush and the Freepers love him.

13. The media is tearing up Drudge over this
This whole thing is making Drudge look like a complete ass. Of course, he'll never admit it.

Good read on MediaWhoresOnline:

http://www.mediawhoresonline.com/

This is the direct link. On the front page.

And a link to a newspaper site:

http://www.sunherald.com/mld/sunherald/news/nation/7720762.htm

Headline: GOP chair claims Clark supported war; transcripts show otherwise

There goes that one.

NEXT!
