One night a month we have a candidate reps come in to speak to our democratic organization in Atlanta.
So far: Dean, Kerry, Kucinich...
Last night was Wes Clark night.
Drew the biggest crowd, not only of the candidate nights, but of our meetings period.
A man who came with them spoke. A college professor who personally knows Cohen and Clark and spoke to them both routinely during the Kosovo war.
The stories he told! Let's just put it this way. Cohen and Shelton were PISSED they could not reign in Clark and they were pissed he had the power to go over their heads to the Clinton administration.
I learned something new: As Supreme Allied Commander, Wes Clark had the right to request and obtain an audience with the head's of state of any member nation. So, in effect, he didn't "go over the heads" of Cohen and Shelton by taking his cases to Clinton but used his authority as the NATO Commander. (There goes the "Character and integrity" issues!)
Had he been just a four star general, Cohen and Shelton would have had reason to object. But as Supreme Allied Commander, Clark had authority in some areas that even Shelton and Cohen didn't have.
