The Survivor Script applied to elections
It's quite possible that the polls we see etc, are simply part of a generic media script. Think about almost any reality-TV shows where there is a competition among multiple people. First phase, one or two guys are shown obviously ahead and likely to win. As the game progresses, phase two, the others catch on, suspense builds up, cliff hanger generation etc. The clips they show are edited to be consistent with the creation of suspense. Will they make it ? With polls you can do the same thing. A poll can be made to say anything. The only good thing is that attention is kept of the process by means of suspense generation.

1. Sadly, I believe there is much truth to what you say.
The degradation of the Fourth Estate will be looked back on as one of the seminal occurrances in the Fall of the Old American Republic.
