I'm in Las Cruces to be a poll observer tomorrow. I'm from the Washington, DC, area but had a free airfare voucher from Delta that had to be used soon so I thought I'd go where volunteers were still needed. As soon as I left the El Paso airport in my rented car I immediately saw an old pickup truck with Kerry bumper stickers all the back bumper. In Texas! It made me so happy.
In Las Cruces there are Kerry signs everywhere, easily outnumbering the Bush signs. Downtown yesterday there were young people waving Kerry signs at motorists driving by. The Democrats here are really pumped up!!
During the football game on TV last night the NM Sec. of State ran a number of ads telling voters what their rights are, explaining who will need to present identification (only first-time voters who registered by mail) and what kind of IDs will be accepted. They also discussed the right to a provisional ballot. It must have cost the state a fortune, but I'm sure the ads reassured a lot of voters.
NM was won by Gore last time by only 300 plus votes, so any irregularities anywhere in the state could make a big difference in who get NM's electoral votes. I think the state wants to avoid bad publicity at all cost!
