Did anybody see Bush at his early morning appearance in Ohio?
At least I think that's where it was. Anyway, there he was, campaignin' away, and who was in the background? A whole bunch of Boy Scouts, IN UNIFORM!

As a former Scout leader, I know that "Citizenship activities are encouraged, but partisan political activities are prohibited."

This includes, according to my training, wearing Scout uniforms to any partisan political function.

I searched the media some, but could not find any images of Bush with the Scouts. If someone can dig them up, please let me know; if the Scout leaders involved can be identified, they need to (at the very least) have their training updated.

1. It is OK to do a flag salute at any function that is suitable

including political events. However, remaining on the platform when it might appear as an endorsement, where the boys are being used as a prop is against the policy. This happened a lot in 2000, particularly with cheney. I am sorry to hear about it happening again.

5. Don't know if there was a flag ceremony involved
but what I saw on TV was a bunch of Boy Scouts seated directly behind the pres as he spoke.

And in my adult leader training, we were told that no partisan politics meant no appearances at partisan political functions. Period. (Including no flag ceremonies.)

6. No, flag ceremonies are always ok.
Otherwise anything could be considered "Political" in some way, such as city council meetings, bridge openings, parades.

Flag salutes are always considered non political (thank god) and a boy scout service.

The boys are supposed to leave the stage after the presentation if it would appear to be an endorsement. There is no harm in doing the salute, but I have a beef with using them as a prop later on.

BTW, I have been a district training chair and a Scoutmaster for many years.

3. No surprise. Boy scouts is an atheist bashing, gay bashing religious
group.

How could anyone imagine that they are serious about being non-partisan?

4. Learn a little before you bash them
Yes, some of their national policies "bash" gays and atheists, but in four years as an adult leader in Scouting, deep in the heart of Texas, I can tell you that there is a wide spread in political leanings within the organization and a lot of compassion in both the boys and their leaders.

It is fundamentally a good organization that builds character in young men... whose national leadership has been caught up in all this Religious Right b.s.

Condemning them without knowing what happens on the ground is just plain ignorant.

Moran.

7. There must be plenty of good organizations that build character
without bashing gay people, don't you think?
