Say Hello To My Dad, the KERRY REPUBLICAN!
You've heard of Reagan democrats?

My father, the 64-year-old in-the-process-of-retiring executive/ fiscal conservative/ grew up in Pennsylvania and Ohio/ lifetime Republican/ loves small government and low capital gains taxes/ never got why I protested the Iraq war/ probably never voted for a Democratic presidential candidate ever/ voted Bush in 2000 "because he will surround himself with good people" just left me a message on my answering machine saying he early voted for KERRY!

WOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

He doesn't live in a battleground state but so what. He says it's time for a change, that the arguments I used to make in all those arguments I had with my family have persuaded him, that he hopes "my organization" will have some control over what Kerry does (I assume he means DU, poor man, he's dreaming) and that it was a very difficult decision to make and he hopes it works out.

YES!

This is not as big as if my brother defected from Bush...but I think it's a good sign. I told Liza. She was floored. SHe said, "I hope it's a bellwether."

I LOVE YOU, PAPA SWINGVOTER!

Yee ha,

The Plaid Adder

32. It's impossible to underestimate the level of dissatisfaction
Edited on Tue Nov-02-04 12:37 AM by Oak2004
with Bush among Republicans, and I really do think there will be defections, amounting to several percentage points, to Kerry.

Bush is simply not a conservative, and he sure isn't a moderate or a liberal. But most of the core of the Republican party still consists of traditional conservative and moderate (and even the occasional liberal) Republicans, people who still feel a loyalty to the party name even as they've watched the Busheviks seize control of the party. For a number of years they were able to fool themselves into thinking that they weren't really extremists, or that they'd moderate their positions once they were confronted by the realities of governance, or they won't last too long with the party leadership, or some other combination of excuses and complacency that allowed them to keep supporting the national ticket.

But now it's all out there: these guys don't believe in fiscal responsibility, or in keeping America out of foreign wars, or even in the American constitution itself. They won't become more moderate, they look upon reality with open contempt, and they'll do anything they can to hang onto power. Informed Republicans have run out of excuses for these jokers. They're starting to see them for who they are. And real Republicans don't like fascists any more than Democrats do.

As a Republican in exile (I bailed after the Contract on America), I think I've got a good idea what's been going on in the minds of a lot of loyal Republicans. They've been torn between their loyalty to the Republican party name and tradition, and what they can see about the current administration. Some of them can't bring themselves to say anything that would seem disloyal to the party, and that includes what they'll tell pollsters. But when it's time to cast their vote, they'll either vote for Kerry or for one of the third party candidates.

46. EX-FREEPER HERE... VOTED FOR KERRY!!!
I used to be a Freeper back in 2001. I'm in college and I used to think that Bush was great, but over his administration I became worried about his actions and policies having a negative effect on our country. Turns out I was right. I was banned for FR for being vocal, and now and here at DU. I VOTED FOR KERRY TODAY. Even though I don't agree with everything he stands for, at least he will bring a welcome change from the evils of Bush.

FREEPERS = HYPOCRITES

in this election should be what is better for ALL AMERICANS regardless of party loyalties, who can bring about a better America for us all, not a select few. We are one nation, to remain such, we must never forget our neighbor...

For all those who dropped the party line of Republican to vote with their consciences in order to gain a better leader, I applaud you and thank you for us all from the bottom of my heart....
