As I waited in line to vote, I thought of Richie Havens' incredible
performance at Woodstock of "Motherless Child"

I hummed to myself the opening refrain, over and over.

Freedom. Freedom. Freedom. Freedom-uh.
Freedom. Freedom. Freedom. Freedom-uh.

Some Times I Feel Like a Mother Less Child.

This is brought on of course, by living in Indiana, the reddest of red states, and I live in the reddest of the red precincts.

As someone was quoted on CNN this morning, of course their vote doesn't mean much given the electoral college, because voting Democratic in Indiana is like throwing a chlorine tablet into the ocean.

But I voted the straight Democrat ticket, so at least if my voice is muted, I have made my peace with my conscience, and know that I have done my part today for freedom from tyranny.

2. The World is watching...
and a lot of people are throwing chlorine tablets into the ocean. It's the final tally nationwide that will assure the world that we aren't all "morans."

6. I just into the office about 1/2 hour ago. Here's my story. At the middle
school where I vote in Richmond, VA, the parking lot was pretty full. Some nice lady was getting ready to leave and saw me trying to find a space; she signalled to me that she was leaving so I was able to take her spot. I parked and walked to the entrance of the school. There were signs in the school saying one needed to get a ticket (never had to do THAT before...good sign, I'm thinking). I showed my ID, voted registration card, verified my address and walked to the back of the line. I waited for maybe 15 minutes before I was able to vote. I surveyed the cafeteria (remembered voting in a classroom the last time), and surveyed who was voting. I was interested to see who was showing up. Aside from older white men and women, I was happy to see quite a few young, African-American men (maybe 18-25) and women voting. I voted around 10:00 am. When I left, the lines were out the door. Also, people were beginning to park on the grass of the school.
